We’re looking for an Android Engineer to join our team at AirHub and help us build mission-critical systems for drones that support in emergency response operations.
Our mission
Do you want to use your programming skills to save lives? At Airhub, you actually can.
First responders save lives every day, but they often lack the right technology to do it as effectively as possible. When someone goes missing at sea, when wildfires spread rapidly, or when emergencies unfold — every second counts. At Airhub, we believe that cutting-edge drone technology can be the difference between life and death.
We are a pioneering Dutch software company on a mission to empower first responders with advanced drone solutions, enhancing their ability to protect lives and ensure public safety.
Our Drone Operations Center enables seamless mission planning, real-time flight control, live video streaming, and AI-powered object detection, all while ensuring full aviation compliance.
If you’re passionate about building technology that truly makes a difference, Airhub is the place for you.
Our team
Currently Airhub counts 19 employees of which 9 are part of the dev team. It’s a remote first start-up environment with a tight-knit group of engineers who care deeply about the impact of our work. Aside from the interesting technical challenges and the positive impact on society, the domain that we work in is a lot of fun. We actually have team outings where we take big ass drones with camera gimbals on them with us and fly missions with them!
You will be joining a cross-functional product team consisting of Software Engineers, a Tester and a Product Owner. We are looking for ambitious engineers that want to work on complex problems, challenge the status quo, build innovative solutions and are as passionate as we are about the product we’re building!
Our Product
At the heart of our platform is the Drone Operations Center — a web-based interface where users can plan and manage missions, control active flights, view real-time video streams, and share those streams with multiple stakeholders, such as emergency teams on the ground. From planning and execution to logging, all in one place. Key features include remote drone fleet control, live video streaming, AI-powered object detection, and support for fully autonomous flights. Next to the web app we also have an Android app, designed to run on drone remote controllers. This mobile component allows pilots to directly control flights and stream data in real time to our platform.
You will:
- Build and enhance our Android apps to run reliably on both modern and legacy drone controllers, balancing cutting-edge features with support for older devices and firmware.
- Take ownership of Android projects, driving features and fixes from concept to deployment.
- Work on real-time data streaming between our apps and backend platforms, ensuring reliability, stability, and performance.
- Integrate, maintain, and troubleshoot third-party SDKs, across multiple Android versions.
- Handle security-critical implementations including our custom secure data mode.
- Collaborate closely with backend and full stack engineers to deliver robust and reliable drone operations.
- Ensure integration paths for partners and customers — such as streaming video feeds to external systems — are stable, secure, and well-documented.
Our tech stack:
We use cutting-edge technology in our projects:
- Mobile development: Kotlin
- Backend: Node.js, TypeScript, NestJS
- Frontend: Vue.js
- Database: Our own custom built graph database
- DevOps: Kubernetes, AWS
What will make me successful in this role:
- Senior-level experience building high-load, secure Android applications using Kotlin.
- Security and networking expertise — experience with VPN implementations, packet handling, or low-level Android development.
- Familiarity with real-time systems, streaming data, and working with third-party SDKs.
- Understanding of real-time systems, WebSockets, and NoSQL databases.
- Ability to contribute to architecture discussions and system-level thinking.
- Team player mentality with curiosity and eagerness to learn.
- Experience working in a cross-functional Agile team.
What you’ll love about this role:
- Direct impact — your code helps save lives in real emergencies
- Work with cutting-edge tech: drones, real-time video, AI, and autonomous flight
- Build scalable backend systems and innovative features
- Fully remote, with optional visits to our Groningen office
- Flat, informal culture with team outings and Thursday drinks
- 25 vacation days
- Awesome team activities, playing around with top-of-the-line drones!
- Your own drone for testing and experimentation
