At Segments.ai we’re helping robotics and automotive companies like Rivian, John Deere, Torc Robotics, Nuro, and Zipline accelerate their path to autonomy. We’re looking for two Senior Product Engineers to join us.
Our platform enables efficient annotation of multi-sensor data for AI training and validation, serving innovative startups and industry leaders building everything from autonomous drones to self-driving cars.
About the work
As a Senior Product Engineer at Segments.ai, you’ll build visualization and annotation tools, involving lots of complex technical challenges.
Here’s some recent work that might give you a sense of what you’ll be doing:
- Building annotation tools for power users, with features like trajectory visualization and measurement tools, inspired by professional 3D software
- Migrating our 3D rendering pipeline from WebGL to WebGPU to stay at the forefront of browser capabilities
- Splitting up massive point clouds into smaller tiles, served dynamically to the user’s browser
- Implementing multi-sensor annotation features that let users efficiently copy and link object attributes across different sensors and frames
- Shipping issue anchoring so reviewers can pinpoint the exact problem in a sample and labelers jump straight to the right spot (sensor/frame/object)
Our approach to AI
We’re human‑first. While many competitors lead with “AI‑assisted” features, our goal is to build the best tools for expert annotators. We add AI only where it clearly improves annotators’ speed, accuracy, or ease of work—if it doesn’t help humans, we don’t ship it.
How we work
We use Shape Up in 6‑week focus cycles with two parallel tracks:
- Main Quest: Two engineers own a shaped problem end‑to‑end with zero interruptions. You’ll start from a problem shaped with the Product Lead, Staff Engineer, and Product Designer. Block out deep work, pair in Discord when needed, ship behind flags, and cut scope to meet the appetite. No support tickets, no ad‑hoc requests.
- Side Quests: One to two engineers stay close to customers—triaging support, shipping small improvements, and capturing insights for the next shaping session. You’ll talk to users daily and join (or review) user interviews.
Most cycles you’ll be on Main Quest building; next cycle you might switch to Side Quests for customer contact. We keep meetings minimal: a Monday dev sync and a company all‑hands every two weeks. Everything else is async writing and PRs.
Each cycle ends with a two‑week cooldown to recharge and self‑direct (fix annoyances, learn, pitch new ideas). We pair this with flexible PTO—if a cycle runs hot, you have space to recover. As we grow, we’ll split support from small projects so both tracks get uninterrupted focus.
No formal on‑call rotation—we share responsibility for critical issues during working hours across our distributed team. Major incidents are rare, and whoever’s on Side Quests typically handles urgent customer needs.
About Our Team
You’ll work directly with Bert and Otto, our two founders, who bring deep expertise in Computer Vision and Machine Learning.
Our team includes 4 product engineers (soon to be six, including you!), a UX designer making complex technical tools feel intuitive, and a Product Lead who partners with engineering and design to shape problems and set appetite.
We build our platform using TypeScript, Vue 3, and Three.js on the frontend. Our backend is powered by Python/Django and PostgreSQL. We host our platform on AWS, using tools such as AWS Lambda, Step functions, and AWS Batch for data processing, and S3 for file storage.
We’re a product team where everyone wears multiple hats and has a voice in technical decisions. We’re small by design. Each person has a direct impact on our product and plenty of room to take ownership of significant features.
About You
We’re looking for senior engineers who make everyone around them better. That means you:
- Have strong technical skills in TypeScript and modern frontend frameworks (Vue.js or React)
- Can take ambiguous problems and turn them into clear solutions
- Know when to dive deep into technical excellence and when to optimize for immediate customer impact
- Take the initiative to identify and solve problems before they’re assigned to you
- Are comfortable working directly with customers to understand their needs
- Have experience with or interest in 3D graphics (Three.js/WebGL/WebGPU experience is a plus)
- Write code that others want to read and maintain
- Can work independently while staying connected with the team
- Are ideally based in Belgium, or located in a timezone between GMT-1 and GMT+2
This role might not be for you if:
- You need detailed specifications before starting work
- You prefer to focus purely on coding without customer interaction
- You’re uncomfortable with the ambiguity of a fast-moving startup
What we offer
- Competitive compensation. €120k-€150k total annual cost to company (contractor rates or equivalent employee salary adjusted by region and employment type.)
- Stock options. As an employee, you’ll have the opportunity to own a piece of the company through our employee stock option plan.
- Work from home. We’re 100% remote, but if you’d like to work out of a co-working space, we’ll pay for your desk.
- Flexible working hours. You’re in control of your schedule. The results are what counts!
- Flexible PTO. Take time off whenever you need it, without worrying about running out of allocated vacation days. We trust our employees to manage their own schedules responsibly.
Our interview process
1 Apply via our website and tell us about a complex product challenge you’ve solved.
2 Cultural fit call with Justin (Product Lead) to discuss how you work and what drives you.
3 Technical interview with David (Staff Engineer) and another engineer to dive into your problem-solving approach.
4 Founders call with Otto (CEO) and Bert (CTO) to align on vision and mutual fit.
5 Paid trial day working on real problems with the team (€600 or charity donation if you can’t accept payment). We only do this when we want to make an offer—it’s not a competition. It’s a chance for both sides to experience working together. We’ll accommodate your schedule if you need flexibility.
How to Apply
If you’ve read this far and you’re excited about the role, we’d love to hear from you. Go to our website to fill in your details and then tell us about a complex product challenge you’ve solved—this is required and helps us understand your approach: https://segments.ai/company/the-team/careers/senior-product-engineer/
We value clear communication, so take your time crafting your application. We’re not looking for a buzzword-filled resume; we want to understand your approach to technical problems and the impact you want to have.
Remember, we’re looking for product engineers who can make everyone around them better. If that sounds like you, we can’t wait to hear from you!
