Assignment overview

In this assignment, you'll will work on the modelling and analysis of analog signal conditioning analog frontend and driver circuits currently used in an optical measurement system.

A key part of the project will be the mathematical modeling and performance analysis of these circuits using Mathcad and MATLAB respectively, enabling a deeper understanding of circuit behavior for further improvements and redesign.

This is a bachelor/master graduation project (thesis) or master internship (to gain work experience), with a duration of at least 5-6 months. The start date is as soon as possible, but flexible.

Your profile

To be a match for this internship, you:

  • Have a background in electrical engineering or applied physics or related course
  • Have familiarity with analog electronics and basic circuit theory
  • Have experience with modelling tools such as Mathcad and MATLAB
  • Have enthusiasm for hands-on experimentation and problem-solving in a lab setting

Key responsibilities:

  • Study and analyze requirements for the circuits signal conditioning such as amplification, noise, stability, and filtering
  • Using Mathcad, model the fundamental circuit behaviors analytically including:
    • Frequency responses and transfer functions
    • Noise analysis and SNR calculations
    • Stability and signal balancing
  • Analyze measurements data via MATLAB to analyze and validate the Mathcad models, e.g. verify if the noise models match with the reality
  • Document findings and present results to the engineering team.
Learning objectives:

  • To gain more insights into analog frontend circuit modelling
  • To have a deep and comprehensive understanding of amplifier noise and stability analysis
  • Gain hands-on experience with analog circuit design and noise quantification.
  • Understand practical challenges in noise reduction and gain hands-on experience with analog frontend and laser driver designs.
  • Offers an opportunity to improve theoretical modeling (with hands-on analog design); preparing the intern for advanced roles in analog and mixed-signal engineering

Preferred qualifications:

  • Background in electrical engineering or applied physics or related course: Bachelors or Masters
  • Familiarity with analog electronics and basic circuit theory
  • Experience with modelling tools such as Mathcad and MATLAB
  • Enthusiasm for hands-on experimentation and problem-solving in a lab setting

Other Requirements You Need To Meet

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement);
  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to be perform your internship. In case you ‘re currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate.
