Where you will work

SURF is the IT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research.


The team you will join

You will join the Internal Services department, in team Operational Support, a fast-growing team within SURF responsible for system, network and data centre management, office automation, cybersecurity and service desk services. You will work closely with around 20 colleagues, spread across five teams, in an informal and pleasant working environment.

Together with your team, you are responsible for ensuring the stability, performance and security of our data centre networks. You and your colleagues ensure that the infrastructure is continuously improved and new functionalities are developed. You do this according to the agile methodology and the scrum framework.


What you will do

As a Network DevOps Engineer, you will ensure a stable and fast network, an indispensable foundation for all our services. You will work on the management, development and security of our data centre networks, and provide links to the outside world. You provide second or third-line support to users in the network area. You will act on incidents and specialist support requests, analyse the cause of complex malfunctions and incidents, resolve them and come up with improvement proposals for structural problems.

What else will you deal with:

  • You will maintain, manage and improve data centre networks and ensure technical and process operationalisation.
  • You will set up the infrastructure required to manage the networks and services, and you will manage the operational management processes.
  • You collect and assess data relating to the performance and security of the networks. You identify deviations and risks and take action accordingly.
  • You develop, test and implement hardware, software and tools and support the roll-out/replacement of networks.
  • You translate the applicable privacy, security, CSR and continuity standards and guidelines into measures relevant to networks and services. You implement and monitor these measures.


Your skills and experience

  • Hbo/wo working and thinking level, with at least three years of relevant work experience at level 3/4 within.
  • Experience with Linux and various networking equipment (Nvidia/Mellanox, Nokia, Juniper, Fortigate).
  • Knowledge of networking technologies such as OSPF, BGP, L3VPN, EVPN, VXLAN, MLAG.
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Bash and Python, and with automation tools such as Ansible and Git.
  • Preferably experience with agile, scrum, ITSM or ITIL.
  • Excellent communication skills in Dutch and English.


What we offer

  • A varied and challenging position for 32 to 40 hours (0.8 - 1.0 FTE) in an informal and collegial organisation with high ambitions;
  • A salary range between 3935 - 5622 EUR EUR gross (based on a 40-hour workweek);
  • 8.33% vacation allowance and a fixed year-end bonus of 8.33%;
  • 36 vacation days per year (based on a 40-hour workweek);
  • A good pension plan with PNO Media, where you contribute only 1/8 of the premium, and SURF contributes 7/8;
  • The possibility to work hybrid. You will receive a home office allowance on your remote working days;
  • A first-class NS-Business card;
  • Two great locations in Amsterdam and Utrecht, both with excellent public transport facilities. Your workplace will be: Amsterdam. Our Amsterdam office is located at the Amsterdam Science Park, with good public transport facilities nearby;
  • A one-year contract with the intention to convert this into a permanent position upon satisfactory performance.
