Role Overview

You will be the first member of our engineering & data science team, working directly with the founders,

finance leads, and operations. Your mission is to design and implement tools that make financial operations

Seamless

  • Automate data pulls and ETL pipelines from client systems into reporting environments
  • Build API integrations between accounting platforms, banks, payroll, and CRMs
  • Develop scripts/workflows to reduce repetitive bookkeeping and close tasks
  • Prototype dashboards and models that surface insights for finance teams and clients

This is a hands-on role with significant impact: you’ll shape the technical stack, standards, and culture for

a new discipline inside Howard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect, develop, and maintain integrations with third-party APIs (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, Xero,

Gusto, Stripe, Plaid, bill-pay platforms)

  • Design and deploy ETL/ELT processes for financial and operational data
  • Build internal automation tools for reconciliations, journal entries, and management reporting
  • Collaborate with accountants/CFOs to translate workflows into code
  • Own technical documentation, testing, and version control
  • Establish best practices for security, data integrity, and scalability

Ideal Background & Experience

  • 3–6+ years in software engineering, data engineering, or applied data science (startup or product-

oriented roles preferred)

  • Solid experience with Python (pandas, FastAPI/Flask/Django), and/or Node.js
  • Experience with SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift)
  • Familiarity with accounting/finance data (ERP, general ledger, banking, payments) is a big plus
  • Proven record of integrating multiple APIs and building automation scripts
  • Exposure to cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) — deploying serverless apps, Lambda/Cloud

Functions, or containerized services

  • Knowledge of modern data stack: dbt, Airflow/Prefect, Fivetran/Stitch, or similar tools
  • (Bonus) Experience in BI and visualization (Looker, Metabase, Tableau, Power BI, or Streamlit)
  • (Bonus) Understanding of accounting workflows: A/P, A/R, payroll, bank recs, accruals, reporting

Key Attributes

  • Entrepreneurial mindset: comfortable in ambiguity, excited to build from zero
  • Strong communication skills — able to partner with finance pros who aren’t engineers
  • Pragmatic and scrappy; balances MVP speed with long-term maintainability
  • Attention to detail and a bias toward secure, auditable solutions

Education

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent

real-world experience)
