The Opportunity

As a skilled Network Engineer, you'll manage and maintain Council's data and voice network infrastructure. You'll be part of a small, agile team supporting over 1,800 users and managing more than 2,500 network assets across 40 sites in the Wollongong Local Government Area.

This is a hands-on role with a high degree of autonomy, ideal for someone who thrives on solving complex problems, prioritising competing tasks, and working collaboratively with internal stakeholders and external vendors.

This is a permanent full-time position and may include on-call or overtime work - dependent on operational requirements. Salary from $100,466.86 up to $116,251.58 per annum plus superannuation. (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications)

You may be required to work across the Wollongong Local Government Area, dependent on operational requirements. This is a hands-on role, applicants must be physically capable of undertaking manual tasks

What You Will Be Doing

  • You'll take ownership of Council's LAN and SD-WAN services, ensuring they're running smoothly, securely and efficiently.
  • You'll be hands-on with network cabling, patch panels, DNS, DHCP, remote access and telephony systems-keeping everything connected and communicating.
  • When service desk tickets or network faults come through, you'll step in as a 2nd/3rd level escalation point, using your expertise to resolve issues quickly and effectively.
  • You'll travel across our 40+ Council siteswithin the Wollongong LGA to install, troubleshoot and maintain equipment-so a current driver's licence is a must.
  • You'll work closely with your teammate and trusted vendors to deliver high-quality, reliable serviceto our 1,800+ users.
  • You'll document your work clearly-whether it's support guides, network diagrams or low-level designs-so your knowledge is shared and accessible.
  • You'll apply ITIL principlesto manage incidents, problems and changes, helping us stay proactive and professional in everything we do.

About You

You're someone who thrives in complex IT environments, bringing extensive hands-on experience with enterprise-level networking infrastructure-whether it's configuring WAN links, managing switches and routers, or optimising load balancers.

You've worked with enterprise voice systems like PBX or Skype for Business and understand how vital seamless communication is to an organisation. You communicate clearly, prioritise effectively, and stay calm under pressure, even when juggling competing demands. Detail-oriented and analytical, you take pride in solving problems before they escalate.

You're self-driven, capable of working independently, and know when to escalate or collaborate. Safety matters to you-you're mindful of WHS principles, especially when handling electrical equipment or lifting hardware. You hold a current driver's licence and are comfortable travelling across Wollongong's LGA. Whether you've earned a relevant bachelor's degree or built your expertise through industry experience, you're ready to make a meaningful impact.
