Job Summary
The Business Intelligence Analyst will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining reports, analyses, and dashboards that help drive key business decisions. The Business Intelligence Analyst will help convey complex analytical findings through elegant data visualizations, including charts, maps, and infographics. The Business Intelligence Analyst will also serve as a liaison between stakeholders and technical teams to achieve the goal of providing actionable insights into current performance. Using visualization techniques and quantitative skills, the Business Intelligence Analyst will help analysts, researchers, and stakeholders to clarify the “story” they want to tell with data and advise on the best ways to communicate these stories through a visual medium.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Build and iterate on data visualizations designed to tell a story and let the data speak for itself while setting the direction for future reporting. Assist with designing the user interaction and experience for interactive tools and dashboards using business intelligence tools, graphic design software, and/or web design.
- Work with analysts and stakeholders to solve quantitative and spatial visualization problems. Advise on best practices for data structure and analysis to communicate key messages accurately and effectively.
- Recognize and adopt best practices in reporting and analysis: data integrity, test design, analysis, validation, and documentation.
- Perform assigned tasks involving data visualization and dashboards. Design and prepare reports, blog entries, and presentations, including charts, maps, and other visualizations.
- Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or coworker in a courteous and professional manner.
- Assist with other duties in OPMI as needed, including providing support to Data Strategy and Strategic Research verticals and cross-team projects.
- Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.
- No direct reports.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Data/Information Design, Graphic Design, Computer Science, Fine Arts, Urban Planning, Information Systems, Analytics, or related field.
- Two (2) years of work experience in data science, business analytics, business intelligence, or quantitative analysis.
- Expertise with one or more business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau or PowerBI). Portfolio of past work showing skill with analyses or data visualization.
- Must be able to pass MBTA’s proficiency tests for Excel, etc.
- Experience in query writing and tuning (e.g., SQL, Access). Familiarity with Python or R.
- Proficiency in data lineage: including sources of data, how metrics are aggregated and how resulting business intelligence is consumed and interpreted by the business.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. As part of the interview process, an Excel assessment may be required.
- Advanced ability to draw insights from data and clearly communicate them (verbal/written/visualized) to the stakeholders and senior management as required.
- Experience conducting large-scale data analysis to support business decision making.
- Must possess effective organizational, analytical, multi-tasking and time management skills.
- Ability to learn quickly, take direction, and work independently and to use creative, collaborative, and consultative approaches to resolve issues.
- The ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
- The ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce.
- A High School Diploma or GED with an additional seven (7) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor’s degree requirement.
- An associate degree from an accredited institution an additional three (3) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor’s degree requirement.
- A master’s degree in a related subject substitutes for two (2) years of general experience.
- A nationally recognized certification, or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one year of experience.
- Ability to effectively read, comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
- Be at least eighteen (18) years of age, except if participating in an approved high school internship / co-op program.
- Ability to commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
- Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences.
- Ability to work effectively, independently, and as part of a diverse workforce team (or supervise, if required).
- Ability to uphold the rights and interests of the MBTA while building and maintaining effective relationships with employees and co-workers.
- Ability to adhere to rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable), and policies of the MBTA, including the EEO, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, and anti-retaliation policies.
- Have a satisfactory work record for the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of this posting (unless if current student or recent graduate), including overall employment, job performance, discipline, and safety records (infractions and/or offenses occurring after the closing of the posting and before the filling of a vacancy may preclude a candidate from consideration for selection).
- Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and / or medical Clinic screening, potentially including physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings.
- Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.
- Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op. Additionally, interns / co-ops must have valid work authorization and U.S. Social Security Number prior to starting their positions and throughout the duration of their program.
