Junior Software Engineer @ Thumo (Africa’s first super-app)

We’re building Africa’s super-app, starting with food delivery. Fresh off a >$1M funding round led by Soma Capital with top Silicon Valley angels, we’re hiring a passionate Junior Software Engineer to help build the next phase of our development as we expand to new markets. This fully remote role is a fantastic opportunity to grow your skills and get exposure to an exciting, fast-moving Silicon Valley startup, all while working IST hours.

What you’ll do

• Collaborate with senior engineers and designers to understand technical requirements for new features and system improvements.
• Write clean, efficient, and well-tested code to implement discrete features and tasks, such as building out components of our routing and cost-calculation algorithms.
• Learn our existing codebase and architecture under the guidance and mentorship of the senior team.
• Assist in debugging and troubleshooting to resolve software defects and improve performance.
• Participate in code reviews to learn best practices, share your work, and maintain a high-quality codebase.
• Partner with our on-the-ground operations staff to understand user needs and help implement effective technical solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) or equivalent experience.
• Include your JEE score with your application if you took the JEE.
• 0-2 years of software development experience (strong internship, co-op, or personal project experience is welcome).
• Familiarity with PHP is a must have (and Laravel experience is a big plus!)
• Comfortable with or eager to learn about AI-driven development tools and workflows.
• Major plus: internships or experience at food delivery / quick commerce (Zomato, Swiggy, Zepto, Blinkit, Dunzo, etc.).
• Significant plus: Experience with iOS (Swift, SwiftUI) and/or Android (SDK) development.
• Significant plus: Experience at any other startup, especially international startups.
• Signals we love: IIT (especially Bombay/Delhi/Madras/Kanpur/Roorkee/Guwahati), exceptional JEE rank (please include in CV), or any standout achievement in any field - tell us something interesting in your CV!

The Role

• Benefits: negotiable
• Time: 40 hrs/week minimum
• Compensation: $1k–$2k/month + performance bonus
• ₹0.91–₹1.82 LPM
• ≈ ₹10.91–₹21.82 LPA
