Backend Engineer – Singapore

Description

The Backend Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable and secure backend services that power digital products. The role requires expertise in software engineering principles, modern development practices, and cloud-native architecture. You will work in an Agile, DevOps-driven environment, ensuring high-quality, reliable, and secure software delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Business Analysts (BA) and Product Managers to refine user stories and translate them into technical requirements.
  • Work closely with Quality Assurance (QA) engineers to ensure automated test coverage and proactively fix bugs and defects.
  • Partner with DevOps teams to automate build, deployment, and monitoring pipelines.
  • Develop and maintain scalable, high-performance APIs and backend services in a cloud-native environment.
  • Implement modern software practices including TDD, pair programming, CI/CD.
  • Conduct code reviews, enforce security best practices, and ensure software craftsmanship standards.
  • Design and document system architecture, ensuring compliance with security and regulatory standards.
  • Optimize backend systems for scalability, observability, and reliability.
  • Where applicable, contribute to blockchain and smart contract development.

Requirements

Education & Background:

  • Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Computer/Electronics Engineering, IT, or related disciplines.

Technical Skills:

  • Experience with Git and modern branching workflows (GitFlow, trunk-based).
  • Proficiency in backend languages: Java, Kotlin, Python, Golang, Node.js, Ruby.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Strong knowledge of RESTful APIs, GraphQL, gRPC, WebSockets.
  • Familiarity with microservices architecture and event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
  • Experience with Docker & Kubernetes for containerization and orchestration.
  • CI/CD pipelines experience (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, ArgoCD).
  • Database experience: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis.
  • Observability tools: Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK stack.
  • IaC tools: Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi.
  • API documentation tools: Swagger / OpenAPI.

Software Engineering Practices:

  • Experience in Agile teams (Scrum, Kanban).
  • Knowledge of XP practices: TDD, pair programming, continuous refactoring.
  • Strong understanding of test automation frameworks (JUnit, PyTest, Jest, Playwright).
  • Commitment to clean, maintainable, and efficient code.

Bonus (Nice-to-Have):

  • Understanding of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and Clean Architecture.
  • Experience with government digital services & authentication mechanisms (SingPass, CorpPass).
  • Knowledge of API gateways & service meshes (Kong, Istio, Apigee).
  • Experience with serverless computing (AWS Lambda, Azure Functions).
  • Exposure to blockchain and smart contract development (Ethereum, Solidity, Hyperledger).

Additional Information

  • Candidates must be based in SingaporeMandatory.
  • Experience working in the government sector is Mandatory.
