Role Overview
The Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining secure, high-performance network infrastructures across physical and virtual environments. This role ensures reliable connectivity, efficient traffic flow, and strong security from Layer 1 through Layer 4 of the OSI model. The Network Engineer bridges the gap between IT operations, cybersecurity, and business requirements, ensuring scalability, resilience, and compliance with security standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, deploy, and maintain LAN/WAN/WLAN architectures supporting business operations.
- Configure and manage firewalls, switches, routers, and access points (Fortinet, Unifi/Ubiquiti).
- Implement and manage Layer 2/Layer 3 VLANs, segmentation, and network isolation.
- Ensure proper physical and logical network security, including access controls and monitoring.
- Troubleshoot and resolve connectivity, routing, and performance issues.
- Manage NGFW features (IPS/IDS, VPN, content filtering, threat intelligence integration).
- Conduct routine audits of network infrastructure and recommend improvements.
- Develop and maintain documentation for topology, configurations, and procedures.
- Monitor network performance and implement proactive capacity planning.
- Align network operations with cybersecurity initiatives.
Qualifications
- 3–5 years of experience in network engineering or administration.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing protocols, and switching.
- Hands-on experience with Fortinet firewalls, Ubiquiti/Unifi switches, and wireless systems.
- Proficiency in network monitoring and troubleshooting tools (Wireshark, arp, nmap, etc)
- Understanding of physical cabling standards, wireless technologies, and structured cabling.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with cloud networking (AWS VPC, Azure VNets, hybrid integrations).
- Familiarity with VPN technologies (IPSec, SSL, site-to-site, remote access).
- Exposure to SIEM, SOC operations, and cybersecurity best practices.
- Knowledge of Zero Trust and modern segmentation strategies.
- Certifications such as CCNA, Network+, Fortinet NSE, or equivalent.
