As a Software Engineering Intern on the Fabric team, you will collaborate with teammates to solve complex data engineering challenges and build innovative software solutions that power large-scale analytics. You’ll contribute to the design and development of systems that ingest, transform, and serve data across Microsoft’s ecosystem, enabling critical insights and decision-making.
You’ll apply your passion for customers and product quality as you provide technical guidance to Technical Program Managers and Product Managers, especially in areas like data modeling, pipeline optimization, and query performance. You’ll learn and adopt relevant new technologies, tools, methods, and processes to leverage in your solutions.

Responsibilities
- Apply engineering principles to solve complex problems through sound and creative engineering, particularly in the areas of distributed data querying and storage.
- Work with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for features that support scalable and reliable data pipelines.
- Quickly learn new engineering methods and incorporate them into work processes, including technologies like Spark, Azure Data Lake, Synapse, and internal Microsoft data platforms.
- Demonstrate skill in time management and completing software projects in a cooperative team environment, often involving cross-functional collaboration with analytics, product, and infrastructure teams.
- Review current developments and proactively seek new knowledge that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of data systems—while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
- Explore opportunities to improve data discoverability and governance, contributing to the team’s efforts in building a robust and compliant data ecosystem.
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
- Must have at least 1 semester/term remaining following the completion of the internship
- Programming experience in an object-oriented language
- You must be legally authorised to work in the Spain to be eligible for this role (Legally authorised = has citizenship or has been granted a valid visa or work permit)
- Fluent in English
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms
