Location: Cleveland, OH; Calgary, AB; Phoenix, AZ (Remote-Friendly with Client-Site Travel)

Robots & Pencils is seeking a User Experience Designer to pioneer the design of next-generation agentic and generative AI experiences. This role blends human-centered design with hands-on prototyping, where you’ll craft multimodal experiences, scale design systems, and partner closely with clients to reimagine how people and AI interact.

As a design leader, you will drive AI-first experiences end-to-end—from strategy to live iteration. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional peers in research, engineering, data science, and content design to shape intuitive, adaptive, and responsible AI applications. You’ll also mentor teammates and clients alike, creating a culture of experimentation, craft, and bold vision for AI-native design.

Key Responsibilities

Experience Design & Prototyping

  • Lead design of AI-first experiences across conversational, adaptive, and multimodal interfaces.
  • Prototype across modalities using Figma, GPT, Eleven Labs, low-code/no-code tools, and IDEs like Cursor to validate concepts quickly.
  • Translate ambiguous problems into clear, testable experiences through research, storytelling, and iterative prototyping.
  • Architect scalable, accessible design systems for consistent AI use across multiple products and surfaces.

AI-Native Innovation

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to encode knowledge into usable datasets, prompts, and training materials.
  • Experiment with and leverage agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, Zed) to accelerate prototyping and iteration.
  • Utilize software agents to create, plan, and manage artifacts that improve both team and client productivity.
  • Forge partnerships with AI leaders (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Perplexity) to embed cutting-edge capabilities into user experiences.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with research, content, engineering, and data peers to deliver world-class AI products.
  • Mentor and guide designers at multiple levels, fostering growth in AI-native design practices.
  • Facilitate workshops and co-creation sessions with clients, enabling them to become active co-builders.
  • Act as a thought leader on topics such as AI ethics, human-AI collaboration, and machine-readable design systems.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Proven leadership in UX/product design, with hands-on experience in AI or emerging technologies.
  • Expertise in conversational design, adaptive UI, multimodal experiences, and scalable design systems.
  • Strong track record of shipping impactful, user-centered products (B2C or B2B).
  • Ability to translate AI platform capabilities into cohesive, global-scale product experiences.
  • Skilled communication—able to explain complex AI concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience leading complex design programs with multiple stakeholders.
  • High judgment, adaptability, and the ability to thrive in fast-changing environments.
  • Growth mindset with eagerness to learn and apply new AI tools and methods.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with frameworks such as Vercel AI SDK, AWS Strands Agents, LangChain, LangGraph, or Hugging Face SMOL Agents.
  • Experience with NLU architectures and chatbot platforms (e.g., AWS Lex).
  • Exposure to generative media tools (e.g., Stable Diffusion, Eleven Labs) and integration into real-world experiences.
  • Background in personalization, platform design, or back-office automation at scale.
