Andrew Tanenbaum in the 1970s and obtained a strong international reputation for its high impact on science and society. We expect the candidate to set up a new group. The department offers at least one (Career Track) Assistant Professor position for the new group, to be filled after the candidate has started. Also, we expect that 2 existing permanent staff members will be embedded in the group, one associate professor on systems for AI and one assistant professor on Computational Science.
We invite experienced researchers from all areas of computer systems to apply. The VUA Department of Computer Science has approximately 250 employees, including 70 permanent staff members. Many domains nowadays depend on advanced high performance computing systems, giving excellent opportunities for collaborations. On the VU campus, we have organized multidisciplinary collaborations like the Network Institute and the Digital Sustainability Center. Likewise, we offer access to outstanding research infrastructure, for example: the unique Distributed ASCI Supercomputer (https://www.cs.vu.nl/das/), which was coordinated by us over the past 25 years; the excellent supercomputer and networking infrastructure of SURF; and several local departmental labs for GreenIT, Internet-of-Things, and robotics. We also have connections with many applications from the Netherlands eScience Center, which is also based in Amsterdam. Likewise, we offer access to outstanding research infrastructure, for example: the unique Distributed ASCI Supercomputer (https://www.cs.vu.nl/das/), which was coordinated by us over the past 25 years; the excellent supercomputer and networking infrastructure of SURF; and several local departmental labs for GreenIT, Internet-of-Things, and robotics. Nationally, there are also strong collaboration opportunities with other computer systems groups, e.g., with the University of Amsterdam, the ASCI research school, and the IPN SIG on Future Computer Systems and Networking. Our educational environment is characterized by a variety of international Bachelor and Master programs with high numbers of students.
