NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence newly established AI Laboratory is looking for innovative and highly motivated AI Engineer who blends deep technical expertise with the ability to guide, communicate, and collaborate. Someone who not only builds and scales advanced AI systems but also ensures knowledge transfer, ethical application, and meaningful impact in NATO’s Strategic Communications.
NATO StratCom COE’s AI Lab is an essential driver of the Alliance’s future readiness in the information environment. More than a research hub, it is a strategic enabler, advancing NATO’s edge in the cognitive warfare domain by delivering the research, prototypes, and expertise needed to further develop critical capabilities and maintain superiority in this domain. By addressing urgent challenges — from synthetic environments and digital twins to election safety, AI-powered training, and predictive decision-support — the Lab delivers validated prototypes and expert guidance, ensuring that NATO and its Allies can rapidly adopt AI solutions with a high operational impact.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead R&D on AI solutions to analyze information environments, assess cognitive effects, and innovate through synthetic environments, audience simulation, and data analytics.
- As a subject-matter expert, advise NATO and Allies, develop educational programmes, and share expertise through forums and publications, translate complex AI insights into actionable guidance for decision-makers.
- Drive forward organisation’s capabilities through applied research, practical experimentation, red-teaming activities, and systematic knowledge-sharing.
- Lead development of secure, scalable ML infrastructure across on-prem and cloud that automates every stage of the model lifecycle—from training and validation to deployment and controlled rollback ensuring efficient, low-latency AI services in coordination with Cloud Engineer and Data Scientist.
Key requirements:
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, or related technical field. PhD in relevant field is an advantage.
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in developing and implementing AI/ML solutions.
- Earlier experience in practical adaptation of machine learning.
- Strong programming skills in Python and relevant AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.).
- Demonstrated experience with at least one of the following domains: natural language processing, computer vision, or predictive modelling.
- Strong background in programming or systems analysis.
- Fluent in several computer languages.
- Demonstrated understanding of ethical and social implications of artificial intelligence.
- Strong intellectual curiosity about the impact of disinformation and information manipulation in the digital age.
- Excellent presentation skills.
