SunDrive is one of Australia's most exciting start-ups, operating in one of the world's most exciting spaces – renewable energy technology. We are on a mission to unlock Solar's full potential by revolutionising how solar cells are made, to unlock new heights of efficiency, and sustainability.
Founded in 2015 by two UNSW roommates, we have come a long way from the breakthrough made in their garage to producing the world’s most efficient commercial-sized solar cell.
In 2022, we secured $21 million in our Series A funding round and are backed by some of Australia’s top venture capital firms (Blackbird, Main Sequence, Virescent, and Mike Cannon-Brooke’s private investment fund, Grok), tech founders, a former Australian Prime Minister, and the Australian Government.
About the Role:
We’re looking for a Junior Mechatronics Engineer to join our equipment development team. You’ll be part of a small but highly skilled team of 2, working closely with colleagues across mechanical, chemical, and process engineering.
Reporting directly to the Head of Mechatronics, you’ll help design, build, and refine the software and systems that power our automated production and laboratory processes. Your work will be central to scaling and improving the technologies that make SunDrive a global leader in solar innovation.
You will have direct exposure and impact across our business as you develop software and data analysis methods for automated processes, in which you will collaborate across a range of engineers with various backgrounds and skills to solve complex challenges and ultimately create a more efficient working environment.
You will focus on:
- Designing and developing software, firmware and electronic systems to automate and control production processes
- Developing data acquisition and automated analysis tools for monitoring production processes
- Prototyping equipment and conducting tests and simulations to ensure that automated systems function correctly (with hardware in and out of the loop)
- Improving general development practices (unit testing, integration testing, CI/CD)
- Analysing and troubleshooting software issues with automated equipment
- Collaborating with other engineers and technical professionals to design and build complex systems.
- A degree in Mechatronics, Computer Science, Software, or Electrical Engineering
- 1–2 years of industry experience
- Solid programming fundamentals, with skills in C/C++ (Python a plus)
- Experience with Linux and working with single-board computers (e.g. Raspberry Pi)
- Exposure to firmware development and RTOS (e.g. FreeRTOS, STM32) — nice to have, not essential
- Hands-on experience with electronics (PCB design, testing, or prototyping)
- Familiarity with tools like Git and Docker
- An understanding of hardware & software integration and working with data or databases
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and teamwork skills
🍝 Free Office Lunch and Snacks
- With hard work comes a hungry team, and our team has access to free snacks, and refreshing drinks throughout the day including a free lunch on Wednesdays!
- Free confidential counseling offered to all employees (full-time, part-time and casual employment) and their immediate family members from the first day of employment with SunDrive
- AUD $500 per calendar year
- 13 weeks of leave at full pay for the primary caregiver
- 6 weeks leave for the secondary caregiver
- 6 weeks of parental bereavement leave at full pay for both primary and secondary caregivers
- Up to AUD $45 per week for public transport/tolls, 52 weeks per calendar year
