Embedded Software Engineer
Who we are
At Twente Medical Optics, we are developing the first handheld laser perfusion imager based on Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) technology — a breakthrough tool that helps surgeons monitor blood flow in real time and improve surgical outcomes.
Our mission is to support burn patients and women undergoing breast reconstruction after mastectomy and to empower surgeons with intuitive, high-performance imaging tools.
We are a spin-off from the University of Twente, combining strong academic roots with an entrepreneurial spirit. Our prototype is already being evaluated in Dutch hospitals, and we are now scaling towards a clinical-ready product.
Who we are looking for
We’re now looking for a hands-on Software Engineer to help us move from prototype to product. You will work alongside our engineering partner, who is responsible for the embedded system architecture. Your role will focus on software development and Linux-based system integration. Our system has a broad range of functionalities including a GUI, data storage, interconnecton, core algorithms, hardware control, camera data management, etc. All must be developed or improved.
Must-Have (technical skills):
· Bachelor’s (HBO) or Master’s degree in Software Engineering/ Computer Science or a related field.
· At least 3 years of experience in software design and development.
· Strong programming skills (C/C++ required, Python preferred).
· Experience with system-level debugging and performance optimization
· Familiarity with Git and modern development workflows
Must-Have (soft skills):
· You are eligible to work in the Netherlands, no extra visa procedure needs to be provided by the company.
· A collaborative team player who values open communication and shared success.
· Able to work independently, but also collaborate efficiently with external technical partners.
· Professional working proficiency in English (we encourage our team to practice “kleatsen” together, but our professional language is English.)
· Comfortable in an international, multidisciplinary team environment.
· A practical mindset. You enjoy building, testing, and solving real-world problems—Research is important, but we are not looking for a pure researcher.
Highly desired:
· Experience in highly regulated industries, preferably with IEC 62304 standards.
· Experience with image processing or medical devices.
· Can do software architecture work, or is ambitious to grow into an architect role.
· Currently living in or is willing to allocate to within the Twente region.
What we offer :
· The opportunity to work at a pioneering MedTech startup with global ambition.
· A dynamic, collaborative team of engineers and scientists in biomedical photonic imaging.
· High flexibility, including hybrid working options.
· Market-conform compensation with 25 paid holidays (based on a full-time scheme) and travel reimbursement.
· A chance to shape a breakthrough medical product from prototype to market launch.
· Starting with a definitely period contract, with intention of long term collaboration.
