Project Manager-Intelligent Transportation System

Role Overview

The ITS Project Manager will oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) projects, ensuring that technology solutions improve mobility, safety, and efficiency across transportation networks. This role requires strong expertise in transportation technology, stakeholder management, and project delivery for public and private sector infrastructure initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, manage, and deliver ITS projects (traffic management, tolling, smart mobility, transit systems, etc.) within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Develop project plans, schedules, budgets, and risk management strategies.
  • Coordinate with city/state transportation agencies, contractors, consultants, and technology vendors.
  • Oversee procurement, installation, integration, and testing of ITS equipment (CCTV, sensors, VMS, SCADA, traffic signals, AVL, fare collection, etc.).
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local transportation regulations and standards.
  • Manage multidisciplinary project teams (engineers, software developers, field technicians, civil contractors).
  • Monitor project progress and prepare regular reports for stakeholders and leadership.
  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement and public communication where required.
  • Ensure that projects meet safety, cybersecurity, and interoperability requirements.
  • Conduct post-implementation evaluations and lessons learned.


Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Transportation, Computer Science, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 7+ years of project management experience, with at least 5+ years in ITS or transportation-related projects.
  • PMP, PRINCE2, or similar certification preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of ITS technologies (traffic management systems, signal control, connected vehicle systems, tolling, transit management).
  • Experience with government contracts, RFPs, and public infrastructure projects.
  • Understanding of transportation standards (e.g., NTCIP, MUTCD, AASHTO, FHWA guidelines).
  • Strong vendor, contractor, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple large-scale projects simultaneously.
