Job Summary

The HR Generalist at PORTA is responsible for delivering day-to-day HR and Health & Safety support while contributing to broader people and safety strategies that foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performance work environment. This role provides hands-on support across the full employee lifecycle—including recruitment, onboarding, training coordination, retention initiatives, employee relations, policy administration, HR data management, and workplace safety. Acting as a trusted resource to both employees and leaders, the HR Generalist ensures consistency, compliance, and care in all HR and H&S practices while upholding PORTA’s values and fast-paced culture.


Key Responsibilities

Recruitment & Onboarding

●      Support end-to-end recruitment for hourly and salaried roles, including job postings, resume screening, interview scheduling, and candidate communication.

●      Prepare offer letters and complete pre-employment requirements (e.g., references, background checks, onboarding documentation).

●      Facilitate new hire orientation and onboarding in collaboration with team leads and managers to ensure an engaging and seamless experience.


Training, Development & Safety

●      Coordinate training plans and ensure training records are kept up to date for all employees, including cross-training, certification tracking, and safety training.

●      Partner with department leads to support the rollout of training initiatives and ensure onboarding checklists and role-specific SOPs are completed.

●      Support the development and delivery of health & safety training programs, including WHMIS, PPE usage, and emergency procedures.

●      Maintain documentation of safety drills, inspections, and corrective actions.


Retention, Employee Experience & Safety Culture

●      Support employee engagement programs, recognition initiatives, and feedback loops (e.g., surveys, suggestion boxes, exit interviews).

●      Track turnover trends and support action planning to improve employee satisfaction and retention.

●      Help maintain a consistent presence on the floor to foster open communication, build trust with team members, and promote a culture of safety.

●      Champion safety awareness campaigns and initiatives to reinforce safe work practices.


Employee Relations, HR & Safety Support

●      Act as a point of contact for employees with HR- or safety-related questions, concerns, or feedback.

●      Support positive employee relations by guiding employees and managers on policies, performance expectations, conflict resolution, and safety protocols.

●      Assist in incident investigations and reporting, ensuring timely follow-up and documentation.


HR & Safety Administration & Compliance

●      Maintain up-to-date and accurate employee records, contracts, organizational charts, and safety documentation.

●      Track key HR and safety dates such as probation reviews, contract end dates, performance check-ins, and safety audits.

●      Ensure policies and procedures are consistently followed and aligned with employment legislation (ESA, AODA, OHSA, etc.).

●      Support attendance tracking, vacation management, payroll input coordination, and safety compliance reporting.


HR & Safety Projects & Continuous Improvement

●      Contribute to HR and H&S initiatives such as policy updates, handbook revisions, or HRIS system improvements.

●      Assist with workforce analytics and reporting (e.g., headcount, turnover, diversity metrics, incident rates).

●      Participate in special projects and initiatives that enhance the employee experience, workplace safety, and support PORTA’s culture and growth.


Qualifications

●      Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Occupational Health & Safety, Business Administration, or a related field.

●      1+ years of HR and/or H&S experience in a manufacturing, production, or similarly fast-paced operational setting.

●      Solid understanding of Ontario employment legislation and health & safety regulations.

●      Experience with HRIS, time & attendance systems, and safety management systems is an asset.

●      Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

●      Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality.

●      CHRP designation or working towards certification is an asset.

●      Health & Safety certification (e.g., JHSC, First Aid, WHMIS) is an asset.
