The project also leverages the theory of estimating functions to devise optimal inference algorithms for these new loss functions, utilizing their underlying geometric properties.

By enhancing the theoretical foundations and practical tools of machine learning and statistics, the project contributes to the development of more reliable, interpretable, and efficient AI systems.
Project Details
The doctoral researcher will join the Helsinki Probabilistic Machine Learning Lab, working under the supervision of Academy Research Fellow Marcelo Hartmann and Research Fellow Luu Hoang Phuc Hau (Nanyang Technological University). The project is funded by the Research Council of Finland and benefits from strong collaborations with the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University, supported by the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI).
The research environment is highly interdisciplinary and international, with connections to the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS unit Helsinki and ELLIS Institute Finland). The project also offers opportunities for collaboration with leading researchers from institutions such as the University of Cambridge, Technical University of Denmark, University of Warwick, and Hamburg University of Technology.
The position is full-time for a maximum duration of 3.5 years (with possible extension to 4 years), and includes a six-month trial period. Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate for this doctoral researcher position will have:

– Prior experience in probabilistic machine learning, neural networks, statistical inference, or data modeling is advantageous.
– Proficiency in at least one programming language commonly used in scientific computing, such as Python, Julia, R, or Matlab.
– Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
– A strong motivation to advance the research project alongside the project leaders and to complete a PhD thesis within four years.
– The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary and international research team.
