Overview

Share is building Africa’s next-generation ISP from the ground up - a fully automated, software-defined, white-box network that fuses fiber, wireless, and intelligent routing into a single, unified system.

We’re looking for a Senior Network Engineer based in Kenya who’s ready to design, deploy, and operate this new class of network infrastructure. You’ll help build and scale Share’s disaggregated core, integrating SDN automation, AI-driven monitoring, and programmable control from day one.

This is a foundational role - you’ll work directly with our Head of Network Engineering and the founding team to shape how millions connect to the internet across Africa.

Key Responsibilities

Core Network Engineering

  • Design and deploy metro and backbone fiber networks (Active Ethernet, GPON, XGS-PON) and ensure seamless aggregation into the core.
  • Operate and optimize high-performance routing and switching infrastructure (MPLS, OSPF, BGP, Segment Routing).
  • Configure and manage network services (CGNAT, DHCP, QoS, IPAM, RADIUS/AAA).
  • Integrate fixed wireless (PtP, PtMP, ePMP, 60 GHz) with the fiber backbone for resilient hybrid access.
  • Lead capacity planning, redundancy design, and proactive performance optimization across PoPs.

Disaggregated Infrastructure & SDN Automation

  • Build and operate white-box switching and routing environments (Edgecore, UfiSpace, Dell, etc.) running disaggregated NOS such as OcNOS, SONiC, or FRR.
  • Implement SDN control through platforms like ONOS, OpenDaylight, or custom-built APIs, enabling centralized provisioning, topology visibility, and automated routing.
  • Develop network automation pipelines (Ansible, Netconf, RESTCONF, Terraform) for configuration, provisioning, and partner network onboarding.
  • Contribute to the design of Share’s AI-assisted control plane, where telemetry informs predictive optimization, self-healing, and intent-based routing.

AI-Driven Network Intelligence

  • Integrate telemetry pipelines that feed ML models for predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, and capacity forecasting.
  • Collaborate with systems and software engineers to deploy AI-powered observability across the entire stack - from CPE to core.
  • Enable closed-loop automation where the network can detect, decide, and act autonomously on key events.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Act as technical lead for deployments in Mombasa and Nairobi aggregation hubs.
  • Define operational standards, documentation practices, and monitoring frameworks.
  • Mentor junior network engineers and partner operators on SDN, white-box, and automation best practices.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Systems, Software, and Product teams to align physical and logical architecture with business needs.

Qualifications

Must Have

  • 5+ years in ISP or carrier-grade network engineering roles.
  • Proven experience designing or deploying fiber and routing infrastructures (AON, GPON, XGS-PON).
  • Strong understanding of Layer 2/3 (VLANs, STP, MPLS, OSPF/BGP, IPv6).
  • Hands-on experience with disaggregated or white-box network environments.
  • Proficiency with network automation tools (Ansible, Netconf/RESTCONF, Terraform, or similar).
  • Familiarity with vendor ecosystems (Juniper, MikroTik, Edgecore, Cambium, Ubiquiti).

Nice to Have

  • Experience with SDN architectures (ONOS, OpenDaylight, SONiC).
  • Knowledge of AI/ML integration for network telemetry and control.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, NFV, and containerized network services.
  • Strong scripting ability in Python, Bash, or Golang for automation.
  • Background in WISP or hybrid fiber-wireless ISP environments.

What We Offer

  • A chance to build Africa’s first AI-driven, disaggregated ISP backbone.
  • Competitive compensation and equity in a venture-backed company.
  • Private health and wellness benefits.
  • Direct exposure to open networking technologies used by hyperscalers.
  • A high-autonomy environment where you’ll own architecture, innovation, and execution.
