About Limbic

Limbic’s vision is to ensure the highest quality therapy is accessible to everyone, everywhere. The way we do that is by deploying AI responsibly, using it to augment clinical care and reduce barriers to accessing therapy at scale. Limbic is already used in over 40% of Talking Therapies in the NHS, which makes us the largest-ever deployment of generative AI for direct patient care. Limbic is deemed safe and effective after successfully gaining UKCA Class IIa certification, the only AI mental health chatbot to do so.

Every day, 1K+ patients interact with Limbic, making therapy more accessible. Limbic goes beyond replacing existing processes with AI and helps 189 people recover from their mental health challenges who otherwise would not have.

We are looking for a mission-driven engineer to help us build the future of mental healthcare.

The Role

As an Applied AI Engineer, you will play a key role in translating our pioneering AI research into products that tangibly improve our users' lives. You will be involved in the entire lifecycle of new Generative AI features, from architectural design and prototyping through to production deployment and continuous monitoring. This is a role for a builder—someone motivated by shipping impactful, safe, and scalable AI-powered software.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and Deploy: Contribute to the design, build, and deploy robust, scalable systems that integrate cutting-edge LLMs (from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and self-hosted models like Llama) with our proprietary clinical safety frameworks.
  • Feature Development: Contribute to the full development lifecycle of LLM-powered features, ensuring they are seamlessly integrated with the rest of our product stack, including security, orchestration, and data pipelines.
  • Contribute to Evaluation and Safety: Help develop and implement robust evaluation methodologies that combine quantitative LLM-evals, user testing, and clinical trial data to ensure our products are not just effective, but safe.
  • Ensure Production Excellence: Implement continuous monitoring and improvement strategies for our AI systems in production, applying MLOps best practices to maintain reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate and Grow: Collaborate with the team through thoughtful code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices, with opportunities to grow your technical voice.
  • Innovate and Tune: Collaborate with our research and clinical teams to help build, fine-tune, and experiment with custom models tailored to the unique challenges of mental healthcare.

Sample Recent Projects

  • Lead the ML architecture and deployment of a voice-based AI agent for mental health service phone calls, integrating safety guardrails and implementing continuous monitoring systems.
  • Collaborate with clinicians and application engineers to develop an AI-powered triage system that conducts text-based patient intake conversations, gathering critical information to provide clinicians with actionable insights.
  • Train, evaluate, and deploy models to detect and mitigate problematic user interactions, enhancing patient safety.
  • Design and executed experiments comparing the therapeutic sessions delivered with voice vs. text-based AI agents.

What You’ll Bring

  • 2+ years of industry experience with a proven track record of shipping and maintaining production applications powered by Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • This position requires availability during standard business hours for our teams across Europe (UTC to UTC+3)
    • Ability to work from London (Spitafields) office 1-day per week is preferred
    • Limbic can not provide visa sponsorship
  • Strong proficiency in Python and a deep understanding of at least one backend web framework (we use FastAPI).
  • Experience contributing to the design and implementation of scalable, production-grade systems for machine learning applications.
  • Hands-on experience with a major cloud platform (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization technologies (Docker).
  • A solid understanding of statistical principles in the context of LLM evaluation and user activity analytics.
  • Experience with databases (SQL or NoSQL) and version control systems (Git) in production environment.
  • A genuine interest in applying your technical skills to solve complex challenges in the mental healthcare space.
  • Bonus: Experience with TypeScript / Javascript.
Benefits & Wellbeing
