The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is now searching for two positions as Application specialist in AI for life science to the Swedish AI factory at Stockholm University.

SciLifeLab (SciLifeLab) is a national center for molecular biosciences with a focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is a national resource hosted by Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. NAISS, the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden, provides academic users with high-performance computing resources, storage capacity, and data services. NAISS is hosted by Linköping University and has 12 partner universities across Sweden.

This recruitment includes the Swedish node of the EuroHPC-funded network of European AI Factories in collaboration with RISE AB. The AI Factory Service Hub is operated as a project under the Horizon Europe framework program and will include up to 50 AI experts and other staff working close to academic and industrial users across the EuroHPC member states to advance AI solutions, training, business and workforce development. Main responsibilities

As an application specialist, your responsibility will be to support researchers in the life sciences in carrying out concrete AI projects. This includes compiling, organizing, and sharing key datasets, assisting with resource allocation proposals, conducting machine learning workflows, and developing complete models. Example applications include microscopy image data, cryo-electron microscopy, structural prediction and dynamic simulation of biological macromolecules, genomics data, and personalized medicine, including the use of language models. The role also involves organizing training and joint activities in AI for life sciences, collaborating with other infrastructures in Sweden and across the EU, and contributing to the leadership of the European working group on AI in the life sciences.

The work will be located within the Elofsson research group (https://bioinfo.se), which is located at the Science for Life Laboratory. Elofsson has worked on protein structure predictions and evolution for over two decades. He has worked on various techniques using machine learning and other computational techniques. His most important contributions to this work are the methods he developed for assessing quality of protein models, notably Pcons and various versions of ProQ. The group comprises 5 PhD students, one postdoc, and one senior researcher.

Qualification requirements

Requirements Are

  • Doctoral degree including work in machine learning applied to the life sciences
  • Experience in large-scale computing and/or organizing large datasets in the life sciences
  • Proven ability to independently author scientific publications
  • Excellent communication skills in oral and written English
  • Ability to convincingly convey the importance and impact of a complex scientific project to a broad range of stakeholders.

Of Merit Are

  • Experience in developing custom AI models within the life sciences
  • Experience working in multinational environments and engaging with international organizations and funding bodies Experience from EU and/or EuroHPC projects
  • Experience in writing proposals for compute time or similar research resources
  • Experience in collaboration with industry or public sector organizations
  • Strong communication skills in oral and written Swedish.

This is a full-time, indefinite-term employment with a six-month probationary period. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Start date as agreement.
