The Mainframe System Programmer performs advanced installation, configuration, customization, and support of core z/OS and associated subsystems (CICS, MQ, IMS) to ensure operational stability, performance, and security for enterprise mainframe environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain CICS, MQ, IMS, and z/OS software and associated products in line with enterprise standards and lifecycle best practices.
- Apply PTFs (Program Temporary Fixes), APARs (Authorized Program Analysis Reports), and oversee product patching and tuning to ensure systems are secure and up-to-date.
- Diagnose and resolve complex mainframe infrastructure issues, including in-depth error dump analysis, performance tuning, and support escalated incidents affecting middleware and operating system availability.
- Customize subsystem parameters, create and manage regions, started tasks, queue managers, and address spaces for CICS, MQ, and IMS.
- Automate and streamline operational activities using tools and scripting languages (REXX, JCL, CLIST) for monitoring, administration, and recovery.
- Collaborate with application, database, and network teams to ensure secure, efficient integration of middleware and core platform components.
- Implement access control, encryption, and compliance standards (e.g., RACF for security, SOX/PCI-DSS for regulatory).
- Lead or participate in disaster recovery drills and infrastructure tests to maintain business continuity readiness.
- Maintain up-to-date documentation for all system programming procedures, configurations, and change management activities.
Required Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience (typically 5+ years) as a system programmer supporting CICS, MQ, IMS, and z/OS.
- Demonstrated expertise with SMP/E, system software upgrades, subsystem customization, and debugging complex middleware/operating system issues.
- Strong scripting and automation capabilities (JCL, REXX, CLIST), and familiarity with operational monitoring tools.
- Proficiency in mainframe security administration (such as RACF) and regulatory compliance.
- Proven track record supporting high-availability environments and delivering incident-free operations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with hybrid or cloud-mainframe integration technologies.
- IBM or vendor certifications in CICS, MQ, IMS, or z/OS.
- Strong communication, documentation, and cross-platform troubleshooting skills.
