Job Overview
As a Junior Developer at Butterfield & Robinson, you will support a cross-functional Digital Experience and Information Technology team. This role is ideal for someone who’s eager to learn, thrives in a collaborative environment, and wants hands-on experience across multiple aspects of the software development lifecycle.
As a Junior Developer, you’ll assist in building, testing, and maintaining web applications and digital tools. You’ll work closely with senior team members including full stack and frontend developers; UX/UI designers to translate user requirements and design drafts into functional, responsive features. You’ll also have opportunities to contribute ideas for improving performance, usability, and overall product quality.
The Junior Developer is a generalist, who will participate in end-to-end product development and maintenance. The Junior Developer will have strong communication and problem-solving skills as they will also act as a front-line service agent on our Helpdesk in troubleshooting and assisting end-users with our proprietary digital tools and other components of our Digital Ecosystem owned by our Digital Experience Team. The Junior Developer will also provide insight in assigning tickets to the appropriate senior team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Digital Experience team in coding, debugging, testing, and deploying new features across the front-end and back-end.
- Assist the Full Stack and Front-End Developers with integration, component development, and code maintenance.
- Participate actively in Agile exercises such as sprint planning, reviews and retrospectives.
- Act as an intermediary, between the Agile Project Coordinator and Developers in regard to project administration needs.
- Own Helpdesk support for the Digital Experience team and full digital ecosystem (troubleshooting, escalation of tickets to senior developers, end-user communication).
- Help identify and communicate technical constraints, improvements, or ideas that enhance user experience and overall product performance.
Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience
- Foundational knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and at least one modern front-end framework (React, Vue, or Angular) with a strong preference for: React and Next.js experience.
- Basic SQL experience is considered a strong asset.
- Experience with CI/CD tooling for rapid deployment of new features.
- A strong portfolio of past work that highlights the previously listed core skills.
- Experience with version control tools and experience working on projects with multiple developers.
- Basic understanding of back-end development (Node.js, Python, or similar) and RESTful APIs.
- Experience with scrum, 2-week sprints and agile environment considered an asset
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, information systems, math or physics (or other relevant degree) 2+ years of experience.
