A leading defence technology organisation is seeking a Cloud Platforms Engineer to strengthen and scale its cloud and developer infrastructure in Sydney. Reporting to the Platforms Lead, this role will play a key part in evolving the systems and tooling that power the company’s global AI and engineering workloads.
The successful candidate will take ownership of AWS infrastructure, Infrastructure-as-Code automation, and deployment pipelines, ensuring reliability, scalability, and security. The role will also contribute to cross-functional initiatives such as the Global VPN (gVPN) platform, enabling secure, reliable connectivity across international operations.
This is a hands-on engineering position suited to someone who thrives in high-performance environments and is passionate about automation, DevSecOps, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, evolve, and maintain AWS infrastructure through Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform).
- Develop reusable Terraform modules and automation patterns for AWS services (ECS, EKS, S3, CloudFront, RDS, IAM, VPC, ALB/NLB).
- Own and enhance the Global VPN platform to deliver secure connectivity for international deployments.
- Improve reliability, performance, and scalability across cloud workloads.
- Enhance CI/CD pipelines (GitLab preferred), embedding compliance and security checks.
- Implement and refine DORA metrics (deployment frequency, lead time, MTTR, change failure rate).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve developer experience and operational efficiency.
- Contribute to the rollout of cloud governance, cost optimisation, and Well-Architected practices.
Skills & Experience
- Proven hands-on experience managing AWS infrastructure at scale.
- Deep understanding of AWS services: ECS/EKS, S3, CloudFront, RDS, IAM, VPC, ALB/NLB, and networking fundamentals.
- Proficiency with Terraform and IaC best practices.
- Experience with CI/CD systems (GitLab preferred) and pipeline automation.
- Programming/scripting skills in Go (preferred), Python, or TypeScript.
- Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerised workloads.
- Strong grounding in DevSecOps principles and secure-by-design infrastructure.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across distributed systems.
- Track record of improving developer productivity through automation and platform reliability.
Desirable
- Experience applying DORA metrics to guide platform improvement.
- Knowledge of AWS cost optimisation and the Well-Architected Framework.
- Familiarity with secrets management (Vault, SOPS, AWS Secrets Manager).
- Experience supporting MLOps or data-intensive workloads in AWS environments.
- Exposure to defence, critical infrastructure, or other high-compliance industries.
