🚀 Internship Opportunity on Autonomous Patch Management at Nokia Bell Labs
It’s now clear that attackers are able to exploit attack vectors faster than organizations can patch. Moreover, by the time these vulnerabilities are disclosed, many have already lived quietly as zero-days for months. To make it worse, even after a fix exists, deployment usually takes time: patching is risky, disruptive, and often slowed by human coordination.
Networks themselves are changing. Our newly designed UNEXT operating system envisions autonomous, adaptive networks where self-managing entities can learn, decide, and recover without waiting for human intervention.
To secure such system, we need patch management to be self-governing: able to detect when to act, coordinate decisions through distributed consensus, and apply or recover patches even from UEFI/BIOS environments: the most secure and primary layers available.
For this reason, we’re opening a 6-month research internship to enhance our existing prototype —making it more autonomous, resilient, and adaptive, possibly integrating AI-driven decision support for patch and recovery orchestration.
Your Mission
🔹 Extend a state-machine–replicated patching architecture toward full autonomy.
🔹 Work across GoQuorum, Bash automation, and system-level environments (UEFI, BIOS).
🔹 Explore AI-assisted decision or anomaly models for autonomous patch coordination.
🔹 Evaluate safety, recovery, and trust across distributed nodes.
Profile
🎓 Current university enrollment required (Master’s or PhD).
💻 Skills in Go/C/C++/Rust/Python, Linux internals, and low-level automation.
⚙️ Understanding of firmware or virtualization platforms (UEFI, QEMU, KVM).
🧭 Familiarity with blockchain consensus (BFT, RAFT, GoQuorum).
💬 English; research-minded, self-driven.
