About the Role
We are seeking a talented Data Scientist to join our team and support the Agency's data science and AI initiatives. Under the direction of the Section Head, you will apply cutting-edge data science techniques to solve complex problems, develop and maintain machine learning models, and contribute to the Agency's analytical capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Data Science & Machine Learning
- Apply existing data science techniques to new problems and datasets using specialized programming methods to meet Agency and customer requirements
- Select, prepare, and preprocess data from existing sources for use in data science models
- Evaluate outcomes and performance of machine learning models, identifying opportunities for training and improvement
- Contribute to machine learning initiatives across the Business Area, including recommendations for ML approaches, implementation strategies, and performance assessment
- Utilize and apply pre-trained machine learning models (including Generative AI) for specific use cases
Data Infrastructure & Pipeline Management
- Support the development and maintenance of data pipelines for both structured and unstructured data
- Assist in maintaining the Agency's data lakes, implementing updates and coordinating with system owners to ensure data availability for analysis
- Plan, execute, and maintain robust data pipelines
Reporting & Communication
- Publish and report on machine learning model outputs to meet customer needs while conforming to agreed standards
- Effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Support reviews of data science and AI activities, processes, products, and services
- Contribute to the development and modifications of data science toolsets and metrics
- Stay current with emerging developments in data science and AI, bringing innovative ideas to implementation
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree from a nationally recognized/certified university in a relevant discipline (Data Science, Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Science, or Engineering)
- Minimum 3 years of post-qualification experience in a related field
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with state-of-the-art data science and analytical tools and relevant programming languages
- At least 3 years of experience in data manipulation and exploration, including data cleaning, preprocessing, and exploratory data analysis
- Proven practical experience in programming, data visualization, and machine learning
- Strong knowledge of machine learning, statistical, and mathematical models
Professional Competencies
- Track record of delivering solutions using leading technology to achieve desired results
- Proven ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
Desirable Qualifications
Education
- Master's degree or higher from a nationally recognized/certified university in Data Science or AI Engineering
Additional Technical Experience
- Experience with data presentation tools such as Microsoft Power BI, Spotfire, Tableau, Kibana, Dash, or Streamlit
- Knowledge of DevOps best practices (Git, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipelines)
- Experience with Cloud Computing platforms
Security Requirements
Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain NATO Secret Security Clearance.
