About SteerAI
SteerAI is an autonomous mobility technology company powered by VentureOne, the commercialization arm of the Advanced Technology Research Council. SteerAI’s advanced AI-powered autonomy stack, developed by the Technology Innovation Institute, empowers the logistics and defense industries by turning industrial vehicles into autonomous powerhouses that can handle complex off-road missions, transforming operations and protecting organizations' most important assets: their workforce.
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced network and communications Engineer to design, implement, and maintain robust real-time communication systems for our autonomous platforms. This role requires expertise in embedded networks, real-time data exchange, wireless communication, as well as the hardware components that enable these systems. The candidate will play a key role in implementing robust networking solutions to ensure high-reliability data exchange between subsystems, autonomy software, and control stations, addressing both the software and hardware integration challenges in mobile, high-reliability environments.
Responsibilities
- Design and configure communication networks including Ethernet, CAN, RS485, Serial, and RF modules.
- Evaluate both commercial and tactical radio systems, understanding performance characteristics and integration requirements.
- Evaluate and implement redundancy, failover, and network security mechanisms.
- Develop and maintain low-latency, high-throughput communication interfaces between embedded devices, central autonomy software, and external command & control (C2) systems.
- Implement and validate protocol stacks such as UDP, TCP, MQTT, DDS, CANOpen, and other relevant communication layers.
- Support real-time telemetry, control of data streaming, and system status monitoring.
- Set up and maintain network infrastructure including RF radios, network switches, routers, and wireless devices on mobile platforms.
- Collaborate with software, embedded, and mechatronics teams to debug and resolve communication issues during system integration.
- Provide communication support for field testing, including troubleshooting hardware/software interfaces in real-world scenarios.
- Document all network configurations, interface control documents (ICDs), and system architecture diagrams.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in network and communication systems, preferably in robotics, automotive, or defense sectors.
- Strong understanding of embedded systems, networking fundamentals, and RF communications.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++
- Familiarity with version control systems like Git and collaborative development tools.
- Experience working with real-time systems, Linux networking, and ROS/ROS2 is a plus.
- Ability to work independently to integrating complex hardware/software communication systems
- Excellent documentation and cross-functional collaboration skills.
