About the Role
As a Workshop Manager, you are responsible to oversee, coordinate, and manage all maintenance and reliability functions for underground mining equipment in alignment with company goals, safety standards, asset management principles, and performance of OEM equipment used on-site. Ensures optimal equipment performance through strategic maintenance planning, cost control, logistics coordination, and continuous improvement initiatives. The role also involves managing budgets and driving technician training programs across all maintenance disciplines.
Responsibilities
1.Maintenance Planning & Execution
- Plan and manage preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs for all mobile and fixed mining equipment.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are executed in compliance with OEM standards, company procedures, and safety regulations.
- Schedule and oversee major shutdowns, rebuilds, and component replacements to minimize downtime.
- Conduct equipment performance reviews and apply root cause failure analysis (RCFA) to reduce breakdown frequency.
- Coordinate daily work planning meetings with supervisors and ensure proper work order completion through CMMS. (MEX)
2.Asset Management & CMMS Control
- Manage the full asset lifecycle: acquisition, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and disposal.
- Maintain an updated and accurate asset registry in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Monitor key performance indicators (availability, MTBF, MTTR, utilization, lifecycle cost).
- Ensure compliance with ISO (Asset Management standards)
- Implement continuous improvements based on CMMS data analytics and reliability reports.
3.Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Compliance
- Promote a proactive safety culture ensuring all maintenance work is conducted under strict safety protocols.
- Lead or participate in safety audits, inspections, and incident investigations related to equipment and maintenance.
- Conduct job safety analysis (JSA) and enforce Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), confined space, and hot work procedures.
- Support compliance with company environmental standards for waste management, spill prevention, and emissions.
- Conduct regular toolbox talks and refresher safety training for maintenance personnel.
4.Technical Expertise & Equipment Reliability
- Provide hands-on technical guidance for troubleshooting complex hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
- Interpret OEM technical manuals, hydraulic/electrical schematics, and diagnostic reports.
- Supervise and verify the quality of major equipment rebuilds, overhauls, and component change-outs.
- Implement reliability-centred maintenance (RCM) and condition-based maintenance strategies.
- Coordinate with OEM representatives and service partners for technical support and product improvements.
5.Technician Training & Development
- Structured Competency Framework: Establish and maintain a comprehensive training and competency development framework for all maintenance trades, ensuring alignment with operational and safety standards.
- Skill Enhancement Programs: Plan and deliver on-the-job training (OJT), technical workshops, and formal skill certification programs to enhance workforce capability.
- Collaborative Training Partnerships: Coordinate with HR, training departments, and OEM partners to implement specialized technical training and conduct competency assessments.
- Multi-Skilling and Cross-Training: Develop technicians into multi-skilled professionals capable of supporting cross-discipline maintenance tasks to improve workforce flexibility and operational efficiency.
- Operations Collaboration: The Workshop Manager must work closely with the Operations Department to coordinate and facilitate equipment operator training programs, ensuring operators are properly trained in equipment use, care, and basic maintenance practices.
6.Logistics & Support Operations
- Coordinate all maintenance-related logistics across underground operations.
- Ensure legal, safety, and documentation compliance for heavy transport and cross-border movements.
- Collaborate with logistics, supply chain, and warehouse teams to ensure timely parts delivery and resource availability.
- Oversee spare parts tracking, shipment documentation, customs clearance, and internal transfers.
7.Budget Management (OPEX & CAPEX)
- Maintenance department to align, manage, and control annual operational (OPEX) and capital (CAPEX) budgets for maintenance operations as for the mine site with direct report to
- Forecast costs for labour, spare parts, consumables, tooling, and training requirements.
- Monitor and report monthly expenditure against budget, identifying cost variances and corrective actions.
- Support cost optimization initiatives and ensure financial compliance with company procedures.
8.Team Leadership & Workforce Management
- Lead and motivate a multidisciplinary maintenance team including engineers, supervisors, and technicians.
- Set clear objectives, performance expectations, and KPIs aligned with operational goals.
- Conduct regular team briefings, performance evaluations, and succession planning.
- Manage manpower scheduling, leave planning, and resource allocation based on operational priorities.
9.Procurement, Inventory & Supply Chain Coordination
- Approve requisitions for maintenance parts, tools, and consumables in coordination with procurement.
- Review supplier performance, cost-effectiveness, and lead times.
- Manage critical spares and optimize inventory levels based on usage and risk analysis.
- Support warehouse audits to ensure inventory accuracy and proper material handling procedures.
10.Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Generate and present detailed maintenance performance reports (availability, reliability, cost, downtime trends).
- Conduct data-driven analysis from CMMS to improve decision-making and maintenance planning.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or relevant trade certification).
- 7+ years’ strong experience in mining or heavy industrial equipment maintenance and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).
- 5+ years in supervisory and minimum 3+ years in managerial role.
- Strong underground and surface mining equipment.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Solid understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
