In a nutshell 🥜

Wikifarmer is on a mission to empower farmers globally by giving them access to knowledge and fair, open markets. Our platform is growing fast, and we’re building tech that makes a real impact. As we scale and move towards a microservices architecture, we’re looking for a Backend Engineer who thrives in collaborative, hands-on environments.

You’ll help shape the backend systems and infrastructure that power Wikifarmer, from clean Laravel code to AWS deployments, while experimenting with AI tools that boost productivity. If you like ownership, practical problem-solving, and building systems that scale, this role is for you.

What you’ll do

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services with PHP and Laravel, writing clean, testable, and scalable code
  • Contribute to our platform’s evolution as we break down the monolith and move toward microservices
  • Support the DevOps lifecycle - ship confidently with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and AWS
  • Monitor, debug, and optimize using logs and metrics to ensure reliability
  • Work closely with frontend developers, PMs, and stakeholders to deliver features that matter
  • Document your work and share knowledge to keep everyone aligned
  • Explore and use AI tools (LLMs, coding assistants, workflow automations) to speed up development and spark new ideas
  • Communicate openly and adapt quickly in an agile environment that values iteration and transparency

What you’ll bring

  • Proven experience with PHP and Laravel, including building and maintaining production-grade applications
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), from deployment to ongoing service management
  • Proven ability to take ownership of backend systems: you build, monitor, and continuously improve what you ship
  • Strong working knowledge of REST APIs, relational databases, and SQL (MariaDB/MySQL experience a plus)
  • Experience working in agile teams, particularly with Scrum, and thriving in collaborative, iterative development cycles
  • Clear and proactive communication skills, with comfort in over-communicating in remote or fast-paced startup settings
  • A startup-ready mindset - adaptable, flexible, and excited by rapid iteration and change

Bonus points if you have:

  • Experience with Python and its ecosystem
  • Background in migrating monoliths to microservices or working with microservices architectures (e.g., message queues, API gateways)
  • Familiarity with AI/LLM tools (OpenAI APIs, MCP Servers, LangChain, vector databases)
  • Specific experience with MariaDB
  • Exposure to observability tools such as CloudWatch, New Relic, ELK Stack, or StatsD
  • Prior experience in a startup environment
  • Open-source contributions or personal projects that demonstrate initiative and curiosity

What we can offer:

  • đź’° A competitive salary of €40-50k gross based on experience
  • 🩺 Private medical insurance for you and your family
  • 🌱 Real ability to impact our architecture - your work directly shapes farmers success and operational excellence
  • 🤝 A flat structure and collaborative team that values initiative, innovation, and ownership
  • 🌍 A diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone feels they belong and can thrive

Employment Type
We are offering this role as a full-time permanent employment contract. To keep things consistent across our team and ensure fair benefits and compliance, we are not considering B2B/freelance arrangements for this position.

Wikifarmer is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. We are actively working to create a workplace where everyone feels they belong and can thrive. We encourage applications from all qualified individuals, regardless of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
