Our client

Our client is an ambitious medtech start-up developing technology at the intersection of biomarker intelligence, embedded systems, and secure infrastructure. Their mission is to enable data-driven healthcare innovation while upholding the highest standards of privacy, reliability, and data protection.

Their multidisciplinary team spans bioengineering, data science, and product development. As they grow they are building an engineering foundation. They are looking for someone to help lead that effort with a focus on secure, private cloud infrastructure and robust systems engineering.

The role

We are looking for an Head of Engineering to work closely with they CTO in defining and executing the company’s technical and infrastructure strategy. This is a hands-on leadership role, ideal for someone who enjoys deep technical work while maintaining a strategic view of system design and scalability.

You’ll take responsibility for developing and maintaining the company’s private cloud infrastructure, ensuring that their systems meet strict privacy, regulatory, and performance requirements. Initially, you’ll be working independently — building core systems, designing secure environments, and establishing engineering best practices — before scaling a small, high-performing team.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Architect, build, and maintain the company’s private cloud infrastructure, ensuring compliance with data privacy and medical device regulations;
  • Develop and optimize core systems in Rust, C, and Unix/Linux environments;
  • Ensure security, resilience, and uptime across all systems, from embedded software to backend infrastructure;
  • Collaborate with the CTO to define long-term engineering and infrastructure roadmaps;
  • Implement modern DevOps, CI/CD, and infrastructure automation practices tailored to a private cloud environment;
  • Establish and maintain strong data governance, access control, and auditability frameworks;
  • Work cross-functionally with data scientists, bioengineers and product management to ensure seamless system integration;
  • Contribute to a culture of technical excellence, scalability, and proactive problem-solving.

Your profile

  • A minimum of five years of experience in systems or infrastructure engineering, ideally in high-security or regulated environments;
  • Strong programming expertise in Rust (a must), C, and Unix/Linux systems;
  • Proven experience designing and maintaining private or on-premises cloud infrastructure (e.g., Nextcloud, OpenStack, or custom environments);
  • Deep understanding of networking, security architecture, and data isolation principles;
  • Hands-on experience with DevOps workflows, automation, and configuration management;
  • Strategic thinker who can balance near-term delivery with long-term scalability;
  • Comfortable operating independently in a fast-paced start-up environment;
  • Rust experience is a must. Please only apply if you have Rust experience;
  • This is a remote role that can be done from anywhere within the EU.
