The City of Ontario has an exciting part-time opportunity for an individual interested in undertaking a variety of specialized technical tasks to support the City’s information technology and cybersecurity infrastructure. This role provides technical support across several key areas, including software applications, database administration, network administration, geographic information systems (GIS), and cybersecurity. The Systems Specialist also assists in identifying information system and security requirements, facilitates secure system integrations, and ensures the ongoing maintenance and support necessary to protect and maintain the reliability of Citywide information systems. The current part-time opportunity is within the Information Technology Agency, Cybersecurity Division, offering a unique chance to contribute directly to the City’s efforts to strengthen cyber defense, safeguard digital assets, and support information security initiatives.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has a strong interest in cybersecurity and a foundational understanding of information security principles. They may have academic experience, training, or internship exposure in areas such as network security, system administration, or access controls. They are eager to learn, detail-oriented, and capable of assisting in identifying security risks, supporting secure system integrations, and helping maintain compliance with cybersecurity best practices. Strong communication, a proactive attitude, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are key to success in this role. Additionally, the successful candidate will embody the City’s mission and vision as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the principles of the City's Customer Service Philosophy – Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving.
This is a part-time/temporary position, scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week, and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans.
The Following Procedures Will Apply

As part of their duties, the Systems Specialist may be assigned to work in the Ontario Police Department facilities or will have access to Police Department information systems. As a result, employment in this position is subject to the satisfactory completion of a background investigation conducted by the Ontario Police Department. This background investigation will include the passing of a polygraph test. Candidates may be disqualified from further consideration during the background investigation for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: an excessive number of traffic citations and/or collisions; arrests and/or convictions; a history of illegal substance abuse; poor credit history (factors include bankruptcy, foreclosures, liens, repossessions, and recency); or thefts from a previous employer. Examples Of Essential Functions
The functions typically performed by the Systems Specialist assigned to Cybersecurity include the following:
- Identifies improvements and enhancements to current cybersecurity posture based upon business requirements.
- Researches and develops recommendations for the implementation of new cybersecurity solutions.
- Tests new software releases, patches, and updates; troubleshoots technical and functional problems.
- Provides guidance and support for a variety of citywide information technology systems and applications.
- Maintains and updates citywide information technology systems and applications through programming or the use of the system / application's administrative functions.
- Provides functional users with training in basic cybersecurity skills and report writing.
- Supports digital exchange of data across various information management systems.
- Manipulates and analyzes data from database environments.
- Develops reports designed to address user specific needs for information.
- Prepares and maintains documentation of cybersecurity policy and procedures.
- Develops manuals describing installation and operating procedures for end users.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Education
Equivalent to an associate's degree or related coursework or completion of related certifications from an accredited college or university in cybersecurity, computer Science, information technology, or a related field. Additional related experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Experience
Six (6) months of experience operating or supporting information management systems. Six (6) months experience working at an administrative intern or apprentice level within the City of Ontario Information Technology Agency would meet experience requirements. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in cybersecurity, computer science, information technology, or a related field may substitute for experience requirements.
