About Understanding Zoe

Understanding Zoe is Australia’s first neuroaffirming, AI-powered support platform for families, educators and allied-health professionals. We turn messy reports, daily observations and care-team feedback into clear, practical next steps through our AI coach and secure collaboration hub. We are an award-winning company, recognised by the Australian Technologies Competition and we are ISO 27001 certified, with a strong focus on trust, safety and inclusive design.

Why this role exists

We are moving from strong MVP to a scalable, AI-first product. The next stage requires a designer who can simplify complex workflows, make conversational AI feel safe and useful, and lay a design foundation that scales. You will work directly with experienced founders who have shipped at enterprise scale and startup speed, and your work will meaningfully lighten the load for families and the professionals who support them.

What you will do

Own the system

  • Build our design system from zero to one. Define tokens, components, patterns and guidelines across web, iOS and Android.

Design end to end

  • Frame problems, run lightweight research, prototype in Figma, test weekly with real users, partner with engineering to ship fast.

AI-native interaction

  • Map conversational flows, clarify tool boundaries, design agent handoffs and recovery states that feel honest and human.

Accessibility and inclusion

  • Keep experiences neuroaffirming and universally accessible from language to layout. Design for real-life constraints like fatigue and sensory load.

Measure outcomes

  • Instrument what you ship. Improve onboarding time to value, task success and weekly engagement across our key personas.

What success looks like in your first 90 days

  • A lightweight design system in production with tokens and a starter component library
  • Two core journeys simplified and shipped across web and mobile
  • Conversational UI patterns defined for inquiry, action and follow-up
  • A weekly research and usability loop running with parents and educators
  • Clear metrics dashboards for activation and task completion

About you

  • You have shipped complex consumer or prosumer products across web and mobile
  • Strong interaction and systems design skills, with a sharp eye for clean UI
  • You prototype quickly, validate with users and iterate without attachment
  • You communicate clearly with engineers and can balance speed with craft
  • You care about language, ethics and privacy as much as pixels

Nice to have

  • Experience designing AI or chat-based products
  • Health, education or privacy-sensitive domains
  • Familiarity with Figma libraries, design tokens and analytics basics
  • Lived experience of neurodivergence or caregiving

How we work

  • Build with users, not for them
  • Small releases, frequent feedback, measurable impact
  • Direct access to founders, engineers and customers
  • Pragmatic process that protects speed and quality

Engagement

  • Fractional contractor, 2 to 3 days per week to start
  • Remote anywhere in Australia, optional Sydney sessions for deep dives
  • Competitive day rate, with scope to expand and discuss equity as we scale

How to apply

Email [email protected] with:

  1. Portfolio link
  2. Resume
  3. Two sentences on how you would reduce onboarding time to value for a tired parent at 10 pm

Bonus points

  • You have shipped AI-enabled products
  • You bring lived experience with neurodivergence or caregiving
  • You can share examples of accessible and inclusive design in the wild
