Master's Thesis: Financial Crime Detection using Graph Neural Networks

Fortnox
Sweden · Full-time · Internship

Background

As a leading provider of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software and a significant player in the Swedish financing and payments sector, Fortnox faces a risk of its platforms being used for financial crime. Traditional detection methods, such as rule-based systems and individual company analyses, require significant resources and often fail to identify complex, interconnected networks of illicit activities. These methods struggle to see the bigger picture, missing the subtle links between seemingly unrelated transactions and entities.

The data available through the ERP can be used to model the scenario as a graph: companies and individuals become nodes that are connected by edges that represent transactions, relationships, ownership, etc. This data modelling strategy captures the complex interconnectedness of modern companies, allowing for visualization and further analysis.

By leveraging the graph structure, we enable the use of graph algorithms, both classical and machine learning-based, to detect patterns and relationships which indicate a high risk for financial crime.

Research Objectives

The primary objective of this thesis is to demonstrate how graph algorithms can be implemented to detect financial crime at Fortnox. The specific research objectives are:

  • To design and implement a graph data model using a real-world (anonymized) or simulated dataset based on Fortnox's operational data.
  • To evaluate and compare graph algorithms, classical and machine learning-based, for detecting patterns which indicate a high risk for financial crime.
  • Assess model performance using various metrics and validation techniques.
  • Explore methods to achieve explainability to understand the driving factors behind risk for financial crime.

Required Qualifications

We're looking for students who are:

  • Enrolled in a Master's program in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Deep interest in machine learning, AI, and finance.
  • Proficient in programming.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a development team.
  • Fluent in Swedish.
