We’re hiring a Backend Software Engineer to help deliver intuitive, AI-powered experiences that enable customers to understand work patterns, optimize collaboration, and unlock the full value of Microsoft Copilot. We also use generative AI extensively in our own development process to move fast, learn continuously, and deliver customer value at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable backend systems that power AI-driven insights and analytics for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Viva Insights.
  • Build and optimize data pipelines and services that process billions of signals to generate actionable, privacy-aware insights.
  • Apply generative AI and ML techniques to deliver intelligent, personalized experiences that help customers understand and accelerate their AI transformation.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to define technical requirements, design robust APIs, and deliver high-quality, maintainable code.
  • Drive engineering excellence through thoughtful technical design, automated testing, observability, and operational rigor.
  • Contribute to team culture by mentoring peers, sharing knowledge, and fostering an inclusive, growth-oriented environment.
  • Continuously learn and adapt to new technologies, patterns, and best practices in AI, distributed systems, and cloud-native development.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ years of hands-on software design and coding experience.
Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with modern version control systems like Git and agile development methodologies.
  • Experience applying AI/ML techniques or working with generative AI systems in production environments.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively across teams and disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing large-scale distributed systems or data platforms.

Software Engineering IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $84,200 - $165,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $109,000 - $180,400 per year.
