DeepJudge is a fast-growing venture-backed scale-up at the forefront of applying Artificial Intelligence in the legal domain. Founded by ex-Googlers and PhDs in AI, our mission is to help legal teams harness their collective knowledge so they can focus on the truly strategic aspects of their work. DeepJudge’s state-of-the-art knowledge retrieval system directs legal professionals to the internal insights that matter most, providing a strong foundation for AI-powered workflows. We’re headquartered in Switzerland, with a strong and fast-growing team in the United States and Canada, and cater to clients all around the world.

We’re a fast-paced team of builders, thinkers, and doers who care deeply about our craft. We’re also pet lovers, travelers, musicians, gamers, and so much more! Above all, we’re driven by a shared belief in what we’re building and the people we’re building it with.

About The Role

DeepJudge is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to design, build, evaluate and refine AI systems that power our core products. In this role, you will have a chance to own the entire lifecycle of an ML-enabled component of our product from research to production: data analysis, modeling, implementation, delivery to the customers, offline/online evaluation, and iterative improvement.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Bridge Research and Production: Stay on top of the latest developments in the AI space and translate cutting-edge research into scalable, production-ready systems
  • Core ML: Train, evaluate, and optimize a wide range of machine learning systems. Drive efficient inference and deployment while ensuring the robustness, reliability, and scalability of ML-powered components across our product
  • Search: Continuously advance search quality through innovative use of models, data, tools, both offline and online techniques, and any other means that move performance forward.
  • Workflows: Shape the next generation of agentic workflows that empower legal professionals to automate everyday work through intelligent search, LLMs, and specialized ML-powered tools. Develop and improve the core components of our workflow engine, evaluate performance at scale, and lead data-driven improvements across a rich ecosystem of custom legal workflows

You're a great fit if you:

  • Have a strong hands-on experience, including training and serving deep learning models
  • Are proficient in at least one modern deep learning framework (e.g. PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow)
  • Are familiar with modern ML practices, and have experience building scalable AI-powered systems that deliver real value. Experience with neural retrieval systems, agentic systems, or publications in top journals/conferences is a strong plus
  • Take ownership of key product components, define their technical vision, and navigate the uncertainty of building first-of-its-kind AI models
  • Thrive in ambiguous environments, executing with focus while collaborating effectively across engineering and business teams
  • Are passionate about solving complex problems and pushing the boundaries of AI, turning cutting-edge ML ideas into impactful, production-ready features.
  • Last but not least, if you have excellent collaboration and communication skills that allow you to share your ideas and incorporate others' ideas effectively

What you can look forward to:

  • Location: We have an office near Zurich central station and mostly work on-premise
  • You will be able to take on full ownership for your projects and tasks from day 1
  • You will have a stake in shaping the future of a high-impact scale-up
  • You will be on a fast-paced learning path, where you grow professionally every day, combining diverse areas of ML and SE expertise to develop and deploy cutting-edge ML solutions

This would NOT be the right role for you if you:

  • Want a lot of clarity and direction about what to do and how to do it
  • Prefer to focus solely on research and avoid integrating the ML features you built into the product
  • Want to work remotely and don't like collaborating in person

We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. If this role ignites a spark in you, but you're concerned about not meeting every requirement, we encourage you to apply anyway – Just make sure to explain why you'd be a good fit.

This is important to us: DeepJudge is an equal opportunity employer, and we value diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status.

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
