Fossil Fuel Transition Lead (1 year temporary position)
Are you ready to help shape a future where people and nature thrive together? To keep global warming below 1.5°C and avoid the gravest risks of climate change, we must act boldly and swiftly—transforming our energy systems from fossil fuels to renewables. This is not just a techinal challenge, but a call for a managed, equitable, and just transition that leaves no one behind.
Through collaboration across WWF offices in all regions, WWF is engaging on this transition at a local, national and global level. WWF is a member of several global policy initiatives on the topic, including the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, and is engaging in international multilateral fora, ensuring that the energy transition is safe, science-based, and truly transformative.
As our new global Fossil Fuel Transition Lead, you will ensure strategic engagement across the WWF network and further develop a vibrant and highly engaged global community of practice. You’ll have the opportunity to build and energize a vibrant, highly engaged global community of practice, and to expand WWF’s internal capacity on fossil fuel transition. Working closely with the Global Climate and Energy Practice (CEP), you’ll partner with National and Programme Offices across the WWF Network to implement our Oil and Gas Policy, provide thought leadership, and ensure WWF is leveraging the latest knowledge to shape decisions and drive real change.

We spend a lot of time influencing Norwegian environmental policy and legislation to achieve our environmental goals. In 2020, WWF ran the TV campaign An ocean of opportunities. We support international nature conservation and development projects in several African countries and in Asia. The work is done in collaboration with local people, local organizations and authorities. These projects are mainly funded by Norad. We have an annual turnover of around NOK 260 million, divided between public funds and funds from private donors and the Norwegian Postcode Lottery.
We are Eco-Lighthouse certified, and our greenhouse gas emissions must be in line with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees

Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership and coordinate the development and implementation of WWF’s global strategy on fossil fuels and support the implementation of the WWF Oil and Gas Policy as part of the Global Energy Policy Framework.
- In close collaboration with the WWF International Climate & Energy Practice, lead our engagement in diplomatic efforts on fossil fuels, and serve as WWF’s focal point for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative and other relevant initiatives.
- Coordinate and further build an engaged community of practice internally in the WWF network, supporting National Organisations and Country Office engagement on the topic.
- Fundraise directly, and support National and Programme Offices with fundraising efforts, to secure more capacity and successful implementation of WWFs engagement on fossil fuels.
- Collaborate with other organisations, and build strong relationships with relevant civil society organisations, rights-holders groups, academic institutions, government partners and business actors.
- Enhance WWF’s global visibility, policy impact and influence on this topic.
- Higher education in environmental sciences, development studies, international relations, law or relevant field.
- Broad knowledge of international environmental policy and multilateral processes.
- High level of strategic and analytical skills.
- Experience with fundraising, donor relations, project management and team leadership and coordination.
- Proven ability to work in cross-cultural environments and build a good environment for collaboration across borders, offices, organizations and partners.
- Location: Norway, Germany or potentially other WWF offices can be agreed with the selected candidate.
- Fluency in English is a requirement. Fluency in another UN language is an advantage.
