Protection Engineer

Our client is seeking a skilled and experienced Protection Engineer to join their team in Oman. The candidate should be currently based in Oman and available for immediate interview.

Candidates with Level 2 or Level 3 protection approval or certification from any advanced protection relay manufacturer (such as Siemens, ABB, GE, Schneider, SEL, or Alstom) will be given strong preference.

Core Responsibilities

• Perform testing, commissioning, and maintenance of protection and control systems in HV and EHV substations (132kV / 220kV / 400kV).
• Configure, test, and troubleshoot numerical protection relays (distance, differential, overcurrent, earth fault, and busbar protection).
• Prepare and review protection schemes, settings, coordination studies, and logic diagrams.
• Conduct fault analysis and relay coordination using relevant software tools.
• Ensure proper functioning and integration of protection systems with SCADA / RTU / IEC 61850 based communication systems.
• Collaborate with design, commissioning, and O&M teams during project execution.
• Verify wiring, CT/VT connections, scheme testing, and final handover documentation.
• Prepare testing reports, protection settings records, and system documentation as per project standards.
• Support preventive and corrective maintenance activities for protection systems.
• Ensure all work complies with Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) and Distribution Code standards.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Power Engineering.
• 8+ years of experience in protection testing and commissioning for transmission or distribution projects.
• Proven experience in HV / EHV substation protection systems (132kV and above).
• Hands-on expertise with relay testing kits (OMICRON, Doble, Megger, etc.).
• Certified or approved at Level 2 or Level 3 by any relay manufacturer (e.g., Siemens, ABB, GE, Schneider, SEL, Alstom).
• In-depth understanding of IEC standards, system protection principles, and relay coordination.
• Proficient in relay setting and configuration tools (DIGSI, PCM600, Enervista, SEL AcSELerator, etc.).
• Excellent communication, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
• Must currently be based in Oman and available for face-to-face interview.

Preferred Background

• Experience with OETC / MEDC / DCRP-approved projects in Oman.
• Exposure to grid substation expansion, protection retrofitting, and testing supervision.
• Strong safety awareness and knowledge of permit-to-work (PTW) and LOTO systems.
