We're looking for a passionate Data Scientist to join our dynamic team and drive the next wave of innovation in advanced analytics and AI. Our work spans the entire Woolworths business—from customer loyalty and personalisation to eCommerce, store operations, supply chain, ranging, and pricing.
What You'll Do
As a Data Scientist, you'll apply advanced analytics and machine learning techniques to solve complex business problems across diverse domains including personalisation, loyalty, supply chain optimisation, and generative AI applications.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Implementing end-to-end data science solutions, from data extraction and feature engineering through to model development, evaluation, and deployment with appropriate monitoring and validation.
- Applying statistical and machine learning expertise using techniques such as GLMs, clustering, optimisation, XGBoost, and deep learning to deliver solutions optimised for business requirements including accuracy, scoring time, maintainability, and robustness.
- Writing production-level code following established standards, conducting peer reviews, and promoting best practices in analytics, source control (git), and quality assurance frameworks.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams including engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical specifications and ensure solutions are embedded effectively.
- Mentoring junior data scientists, providing technical guidance, and contributing to team capability building through knowledge sharing and code reviews.
- Communicating complex insights effectively to diverse audiences, translating technical concepts into business impact and presenting methodology and model logic with the appropriate level of detail.
We're seeking a technically skilled and business-savvy individual who can bridge the gap between data science and commercial outcomes. The ideal candidate will have:
- 4+ years of hands-on experience in a data science role, with demonstrated ability to deliver impactful analytical solutions in production environments.
- Strong technical proficiency in multiple coding languages (e.g., Python, SQL), with expert-level skills in exploratory data analysis and data manipulation.
- Solid foundation in statistical and machine learning techniques, with proven experience implementing model evaluation strategies and identifying improvement opportunities.
- Experience working with cloud platforms (preferably GCP products like BigQuery, Vertex AI, GCS), with consideration for cost efficiency and best practices.
- Tertiary qualifications in engineering, mathematics, actuarial studies, statistics, physics, computer science, or a related quantitative discipline.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, including the ability to manage expectations, communicate progress proactively, and adapt communication style to different audiences.
- Systematic problem-solving abilities and experience troubleshooting complex technical issues within cloud platforms independently.
