About Scaleout

Scaleout’s mission is to enable its customers to develop machine learning solutions without compromising on data ownership and privacy. Our main product is Scaleout Edge – a distributed AI platform designed to orchestrate machine learning across edge-to-cloud. Being built natively for federated learning, our software helps AI developers in mission-critical organizations tackle challenges like privacy, security, compliance, and data accessibility. By bringing machine learning to the data, we enable our customers to train, deploy and govern machine learning models as close to the edge as possible, be it on or near vehicles, drones, edge clouds, or industry robots.

We are a deep tech, dual-use company serving customers in mission-critical organizations, including defence, automotive and industrial IoT. As a member of the Scaleout core developer team your work will have an impact by pushing the frontier of ML privacy, cybersecurity and embodied AI forward.

Scaleout is supported by leading deep tech investors such as Navigare Ventures, Fairpoint Capital,  ALMI Invest, Uppsala University Invest and the Beijer Foundation.

Our Workplace

Our team at Scaleout, made up of experts in data science, distributed systems and software engineering combines research expertise from top-ranked Uppsala University with business experience from companies such as Google, BCG and Viacom. You will be part of a team that has AI research in its DNA, with a clear goal to impact industry by bringing new edge computing and privacy-enhancing technologies to market. We provide an innovative environment where your work is critical to pioneering AI projects, particularly focusing on federated learning.

We offer a hybrid workplace with office locations in Uppsala, Stockholm and Göteborg. You will be expected to be available for limited travel between sites, and to customer facilities and to international conferences. For this role we expect that you have the Uppsala site as your home base.

About the Role

We are looking for a hands-on engineer to join our core development team. Your primary focus will be on ensuring that the systems we build to make AI safe and compliant are themselves robust, secure, and operationally elegant — from cloud data centers to edge devices. You will work closely with the CISO to contribute to and execute our compliance and certification roadmap. As a person, you always do your best to get the job done also when it requires you to go outside of your technical comfort zone.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and operate Scaleout’s core infrastructure across cloud and edge environments, ensuring reliability, observability, and performance for mission-critical AI workloads.

  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines for our SDKs, control plane, and partner deployments — from code commit to container image to live federations.

  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and telemetry frameworks that give the team real-time visibility into the health and compliance of distributed systems.

  • Harden our platform’s security posture through automation of secrets management, patching, signing, and vulnerability scanning (aligned with NIS2 and AI Act requirements).

  • Collaborate closely with core engineering and field teams to design deployment architectures that scale from research labs to regulated, air-gapped defence environments.

  • Contribute to infrastructure automation and tooling — Terraform modules, Helm charts, and internal operator scripts — that make deployments repeatable and auditable.

Who You Are

Above all else we seek passionate individuals who are eager to tackle complex problems, and that do their best work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. You are internally motivated, exercise a great deal of self-leadership, and enjoy assuming responsibility both for your own work and for the team. We believe that you hold an advanced degree in computer science or a related field.

The successful candidate must be a Swedish citizen eligible to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Job requirements

This role has the following set of required and optional qualifications.

Must have Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, or Platform Engineering, preferably within distributed or high-availability systems.
  • Proven hands-on skills with Kubernetes, container orchestration, and cloud infrastructure (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
  • Strong background in CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar) and infrastructure as code (Terraform, Helm, Ansible).
  • Deep understanding of Linux systems administration, networking, and system observability.
  • Experience implementing monitoring and alerting with Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent stacks.
  • Solid grounding in security-by-design: key management, TLS, identity, secrets handling, and vulnerability management.
  • Proven ability to design and operate resilient, highly available environments (multi-region or hybrid edge/cloud).
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills in English.

  • Meriting Qualifications:

    • Experience in AI/ML infrastructure, federated learning, or data-intensive systems.
    • Familiarity with edge computing, air-gapped deployments, or secure enclave / TEE environments.
    • Prior work on compliance-sensitive systems (e.g., ISO 27001, NIS2, or similar).
    • Knowledge of distributed storage and messaging.
    • Interest or background in Defence, industrial, or critical-infrastructure sectors.

The successful candidate must be a Swedish citizen eligible to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
