About the Role
Cooperdata is looking for experienced software engineers to support a leading frontier AI lab in advancing research and infrastructure for next-generation machine learning systems.
In this role, you’ll help solve real technical challenges drawn from major open-source repositories — using hands-on coding, debugging, and validation to make meaningful contributions to the foundation of cutting-edge AI research.
This is a rare opportunity to apply your engineering expertise to projects that power the AI breakthroughs of the future — all while working independently, remotely, and on your own schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, analyze, and resolve software issues sourced from large open-source codebases
- Write, test, and validate code solutions that fix bugs and improve system performance
- Implement and refine APIs, database structures, and backend components supporting AI workflows
- Configure local development environments to replicate, debug, and investigate complex issues
- 1+ years of professional experience as a software engineer in a fast-paced or technically demanding environment
- Proven contributions to one or more of the following open-source repositories (required):
- astropy/astropy
- django/django
- matplotlib/matplotlib
- pytest-dev/pytest
- scikit-learn/scikit-learn
- sphinx-doc/sphinx
- sympy/sympy
- Advanced proficiency in Python, API development, and structured testing
- Excellent analytical, written, and communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and persistence in debugging complex systems
- Residency in the EU
- Fully remote & asynchronous — work wherever and whenever you’re most productive
- Flexible workload: 10-20 hours per week, with potential to scale up to 40 hours
- Open-ended engagement: opportunity for long-term collaboration
- Start date: mid to late November (applications reviewed on a rolling basis)
- Independent contractor engagement through Cooperdata
- Hourly compensation, paid weekly
