Scaleout’s mission is to enable its customers to develop machine learning solutions without compromising on data ownership and privacy. Our main product is Scaleout Edge – a distributed AI platform designed to orchestrate machine learning across edge-to-cloud. Our team at Scaleout, made up of experts in data science, distributed systems and software engineering combines research expertise from top-ranked Uppsala University with business experience from companies such as Google, BCG and Viacom. You will be part of a team that has AI research in its DNA, with a clear goal to impact industry by bringing new edge computing and privacy-enhancing technologies to market. We provide an innovative environment where your work is critical to pioneering AI projects, particularly focusing on federated learning. 

We offer a hybrid workplace with office locations in Uppsala, Stockholm and Göteborg. You will be expected to be available for limited travel between sites, and to customer facilities and to international conferences. For this role we expect that you have the Uppsala site as your home base. 

We are looking for a hands-on senior developer to join our core development team. Your primary focus will be on advancing the product. You will be working closely both with the dev team as well as with our ML engineers to drive the roadmap of the Scaleout Edge platform forward. You will be expected to take a great deal of ownership for large parts of the code base, ranging from backend functionality to core security features to test-and deployment automation, all while assuring that we are delivering outcomes both for our customers and our business. You are a developer prepared to do your best to get the job done also when it requires you to go outside of your technical comfort zone.  

You will also contribute to our R&D, primarily to our toolkits and workflows realizing machine learning use-cases on top of the Scaleout Edge platform.

You are internally motivated, exercise a great deal of self-leadership, and enjoy assuming responsibility both for your own work and for the team. We believe that you hold an advanced degree in computer science or a related field. 

The successful candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security clearance, and be authorized to work in Sweden.   

This role has the following set of required and optional qualifications.

Must have Qualifications 

• 5+ years of professional experience in software engineering, with a focus on backend systems, distributed architectures, or platform development.
• Proficiency in Python and C++ with experience writing production-grade, testable, and maintainable code.   
• Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts — APIs, messaging, consensus, state management, and scalability.
• Strong grounding in API design (REST, gRPC) and data serialization formats (JSON, protobuf).
• Ability to work autonomously in a small, senior, interdisciplinary team (ML engineers, SREs, and researchers).

Meriting Qualifications

• Projects involving drones, robotics, autonomous systems.  
• Experience with edge computing, federated learning, or distributed ML orchestration.
• Familiarity with security and compliance requirements (e.g NIS2).
• Knowledge of observability and telemetry frameworks (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus client libs).
• Familiarity with low-level systems programming for performance-critical components.
• Understanding of DevOps/SRE principles to collaborate effectively with infrastructure engineers.
• Familiarity with web frameworks such as React and Django. 
• Interest in AI infrastructure, MLOps, or privacy-preserving computing.
• Experience from the defence sector.
