DevOps Engineer (AWS / Edge AI)

Location: York-based hybrid (UK-right-to-work required)

Type: Full-time

Compensation: Competitive salary + equity options

Start: ASAP

Fairfield Vision builds field-deployed AI systems for real-world agriculture.

We are not building dashboards for corporate offices. We put rugged AI hardware in tropical farms, fuse it with satellite data, and produce actionable intelligence for crop disease management and yield forecasting.

We already have live deployments with tier-1 food companies. The tech stack is real, the customers are real, and reliability matters more than slide decks.

We are hiring a DevOps Engineer to take ownership of our cloud infrastructure and deployment pipeline as we move from MVP to scaled operation.

Role

You will own and harden our cloud and deployment backbone. That includes:

Core responsibilities

  • Build, optimise, and maintain AWS infrastructure (VPCs, IAM, ECS/EKS or serverless stack, RDS, S3, networking, security)
  • Deploy and manage CI/CD pipelines for edge and cloud services
  • Ensure logging, monitoring, and alerting are in place and enforced
  • Support secure OTA updates for Jetson-based edge devices
  • Implement automated testing and release processes for ML inference services
  • Enforce good infra hygiene: version control discipline, backups, access control, costs, documentation
  • Coordinate with ML and embedded engineers to ensure smooth end-to-end deployment

Not theoretical. If you enjoy clean architecture diagrams but hate touching real systems, this is the wrong role.

You bring

Required

  • Strong AWS operations experience
  • Practical DevOps discipline (CI/CD, automation, IaC, observability)
  • Solid networking and security fundamentals
  • Comfortable working with Linux systems and containerised workloads
  • Git as second nature
  • A bias toward simplicity and reliability over cleverness
  • Ability to work independently and deliver to deadlines
  • Clear communicator who documents properly

Nice to have

  • Terraform or CloudFormation experience
  • Exposure to edge devices/GPU inference (Jetson preferred)
  • Python familiarity
  • Remote sensing / geospatial workflows
  • Experience securing infrastructure in low-connectivity / intermittent environments
  • Experience in ML deployment pipelines

  • This job will suit you if
    • You prefer real engineering over pitch decks
    • You like working in a small team where your output is visible and consequential
    • You care more about uptime, security, reproducibility, and cost control than hype terms
    • You want to build systems that actually run in the wild, not in a lab demo

This job will not suit you if
    • You want layers of process, big-company hand-holding, or “enterprise architecture” theatre
    • You dislike documentation and operational discipline
    • You prefer advisory roles over execution
    • You cannot handle ambiguity or field realities (heat, rain, dodgy connectivity, imperfect data)
