The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its Projects Directorate (PJ) - Energy & Environment Department (E2D) - Energy Office Division (ERGO) at its headquarters in Luxembourg: TRAINEE

Duration: 5 months (fixed start date: 1st March/April 2026)

Objective of the traineeship

The Energy Office in the Energy and Environment Department is enhancing its capacity to manage, analyse and monitor information related to environmental, climate and social (ECS) aspects, as well as procurement activities, across EIB operations. To strengthen evidence-based decision-making and resource deployment, and to support the Division’s analytical work, efforts are underway to consolidate data, streamline project appraisal and reporting, and explore innovative tools for data analysis. The Division aims to improve how project-related ECS, geospatial and procurement information is collected, structured, and visualized, facilitating more efficient tracking of key indicators and trends. In parallel, the team is exploring the potential of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to support the review and analysis of documentation in a rigorous and responsible manner. It is also considering how to enhance document housekeeping and management in a way that enables for quick retrieval, analysis and, where feasible, generation of reports / briefings.

Responsibilities

  • Map and integrate data sources related to Environment, Climate, Social and Procurement, support the design of a coherent and standardised framework for project-level data tracking that facilitates effective resource management and identifies key operational needs.
  • Contribute to the development of interactive dashboards and visual analytics that translate complex datasets into clear, evidence-based insights on trends, supporting decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Explore and test AI-assisted approaches for country profiles, gap analysis (e.g. between national frameworks and EIB standards), document analysis, helping the team assess how artificial intelligence can be applied rigorously, credibly, and responsibly to the project due diligence tasks in the energy and water sector.
  • Promote data and AI literacy by sharing methodologies, tools and lessons learned with colleagues, contributing to the Division’s broader knowledge base and innovation culture. This may include developing a data base of rigorous prompts and creating agents. It will involve working closely with experts to understand needs.

Academic Qualifications And Professional Skills

  • Final year of studies or University Degree (preferably Master’s) ideally in one of the following fields: Data Science, Information Management, Statistics, or Computer Science or in Environmental or social Sciences, engineering or business field that included modules data science, information management, statistics.
  • A demonstrated interest in sustainable finance, environmental and social governance (ESG), or public procurement is considered a strong asset.
  • Proven ability to collect, clean, and analyse datasets using tools such as Excel, Power BI, Tableau, or similar.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and structuring principles; knowledge of SQL or Python.
  • Understanding of data visualisation principles and experience producing dashboards or analytical reports.
  • Proven experience of using AI-assisted analysis tools.
  • Ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights and visual narratives.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
