“We’re not just renovating spaces. We’re redefining the standard.”

IT & Cybersecurity Specialist

Location: Remote

Company Overview:

At Smart Build, we're not just renovating spaces, we're redefining the standard for multifamily and commercial renovations. What began nearly 20 years ago as a small coatings company (Smart Coats) has grown into one of the region’s largest and most respected renovation service providers.

In 2018, we rebranded as Smart Build to reflect our expanded capabilities: from detailed take-offs and precise carpentry to full-scale capital projects. We’ve completed over 200+ units spanning apartment complexes, condominium associations, retail buildings, and office spaces, each with a sharp focus on quality, efficiency, and client satisfaction.

But what really sets us apart isn’t just what we do, it’s how we do it:

  • Growth-minded team that values ownership, continuous improvement, and results
  • Lean operations that let us move fast without bureaucracy
  • Customer-first mindset that drives repeat business and long-term partnerships
  • National reach with strong roots in Greater Boston, allowing us to scale without losing our personal touch

We’re in an exciting phase of growth, and we’re building a team that’s ready to scale with us. If you’re someone who wants to make a real impact, be trusted to do great work, and grow your career, not just clock in, we’d love to talk.

Why This Role Matters:

Smart Build and Smart Coats are seeking a highly skilled IT & Cybersecurity Specialist (Remote) to safeguard the company’s digital infrastructure, protect against phishing and cyber threats, and support secure operations across all regions. This role is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and continuously improving cybersecurity and IT systems in compliance with our Coalition and CFC cyber insurance policies.

You will play a critical role in strengthening network defenses, supporting remote employees, managing secure system access, and responding to potential incidents—all while helping build a proactive security culture across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Cybersecurity & Risk Management

  • Develop, implement, and manage firewalls, intrusion detection, and prevention systems to align with cyber insurance and company requirements.
  • Configure and maintain multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all users (email, VPN, remote access, admin accounts)
  • Oversee data encryption for all devices (laptops, desktops, portable media) to ensure compliance with insured security controls
  • Conduct phishing prevention training and run quarterly simulated phishing tests to reduce social engineering risks.
  • Maintain offline weekly data backups for all business-critical data and ensure quick restoration capability.
  • Monitor system logs, detect anomalies, and coordinate response to potential threats.
  • Maintain endpoint protection software (antivirus, anti-malware, patch management) and ensure it’s active across all remote devices.

Network & Systems Administration

  • Manage email domain security (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) to prevent spoofing and business email compromise.
  • Administer secure VPNs, remote desktop access, and role-based permissions for remote and field teams.
  • Support remote employees with troubleshooting, system setup, and access management while maintaining strict compliance with cybersecurity policies.

Incident Response & Coordination

  • Serve as the first responder for security alerts and suspected breaches — isolate threats, analyze activity, and coordinate remediation steps.
  • Collaborate with Coalition’s 24/7 cyber incident response team when incidents occur
  • Document all incidents, system changes, and security logs; prepare reports for internal leadership and insurance renewals.
  • Participate in post-incident reviews and help strengthen systems to prevent recurrence.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure company-wide compliance with cybersecurity insurance requirements (MFA, encryption, secure backups).
  • Maintain accurate documentation of IT assets, access credentials, and infrastructure architecture.
  • Prepare cybersecurity status updates, audit reports, and recommendations for leadership.
  • Partner with HR and management to develop onboarding/offboarding IT protocols and employee access policies.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in IT systems administration or cybersecurity roles (remote support experience preferred).
  • Strong working knowledge of network security, email protection, and Microsoft 365 admin tools.
  • Hands-on experience with firewalls (e.g., Fortinet, SonicWall, Cisco Meraki) and endpoint protection tools.
  • Understanding of ransomware, phishing, and social engineering prevention techniques.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills.
  • Certifications preferred: CompTIA Security+, CEH, CISSP, or MS-900 (not required but a plus).

Personal Attributes

  • Self-motivated and disciplined with the ability to work independently in a remote setting.
  • Strong communicator who can explain complex IT/security issues in plain language.
  • Proactive, solution-oriented, and capable of anticipating potential risks before they escalate.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to support both technical and non-technical staff.
