About Carboneers
Carboneers is a pioneering biochar project developer working with smallholder farming communities across Ghana and India to create sustainable carbon removal solutions. We transform agricultural waste into biochar, providing farmers with improved soil health, increased crop yields, and additional income through carbon credit sales. Our mission combines climate action with meaningful socio-economic impact for rural communities.
The role
We're seeking a driven Data Scientist to join our growing team. This position sits at the heart of our carbon and impact measurement efforts, extracting and analyzing critical operational and socio-economic data from our biochar projects across Ghana and India. You'll work closely with our field teams, implementation partners, MRV development and farming communities to ensure we capture the full storyof our environmental and social impact. Thusfar, we have focussed a lot on how biochar should be made and how this is transparently tracked, but now it is time to coherently gather all that data and use it for our next steps!
Key Responsibilities
- Extract, model, analyse, and synthesize operational data from our biochar production sites in Ghana and India.
- Monitor and evaluate socio-economic impact metrics including farmer income improvements, women's empowerment outcomes, and community development indicators
- Work with our digital monitoring systems to ensure data quality, integrity and model predictability
- Collaborate with our MRV team to create models that automatically check and verify datapoints for biochar projects.
- Collaborate with field supervisors and general managers to optimize data collection processes.
- Develop impact reports for stakeholders, including our third-party certification bodies (CERES, Carbon Standards International)
- Support our ClaimCheck certification process for co-benefits verification
- Travel to project sites in Ghana or India annually to conduct field assessments and strengthen relationships with local teams
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and scale our impact
Qualifications & Experience
- 3+ years of working experience as a datascientist
- Strong data analysis skills with the ability to work with complex datasets from multiple sources
- Excellent communication skills to translate data insights into compelling narratives
- Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to work independently and drive initiatives forward
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities and ability to influence without direct authority
- Willingness to travel to Ghana or India at least once per year
- Based in the Netherlands or willing to relocate
Personal attributes
- Experience working with rural communities or in international development contexts
- Experience with mobile data collection tools and digital monitoring systems
- Understanding of carbon markets, climate solutions, or sustainable agriculture
- Fluency in English, Spanish and/or French is a plus
- Passion for creating positive environmental and social impact
What We Offer
- A chance to play a central role in scaling a mission-driven climate-tech startup.
- Freedom and responsibility to create data driven and impactfull biochar projects for a globally relevant brand.
- Competitive salary with performance incentives. Trying to be transparent: our intention would be between 60.000 to 70.000 EU yearly without bonus. Support with relocation is available for international applicants. We are curious to hear your opinion.
- Flexible working environment (remote/hybrid). We do want people in the office at least 2 days but the other days, you can choose yourself.
- A passionate team working to create real climate and social impact while also having loads of fun together.
- Disclaimer: We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team and therefore we strongly encourage applications from underrepresented groups, which in our case includes women.
