Senior Software Engineer II, Backend – Intelligence Team
About The Team
The Customer Journey Intelligence Backend team builds the foundation for HubSpot’s personalized customer experiences. We power the systems behind smarter onboarding, recommendations, and routing, helping customers get value from HubSpot faster and more intuitively.
Our work spans key services like the Tasks Recommendation Service, Route Recommendation Service, Onboarding Engine, and Third-Party Data Sync, which together enable adaptive, data-driven onboarding and everboarding experiences across the platform.
What You’ll Do
As a Senior Software Engineer II on the Intelligence Backend team, you’ll:
- Design and build scalable backend systems that deliver personalized recommendations and adaptive customer journeys.
- Lead the technical direction for services such as the Tasks Recommendation Service, which personalizes onboarding tasks based on each user’s goals and context, and the Route Recommendation Service, which determines the next best step in the customer journey.
- Partner closely with AI, data, and product teams to integrate contextual signals and machine learning models into real-time decisioning systems.
- Collaborate closely with product managers to deeply understand customer needs, pain points, and workflows.
- Translate user problems into technical solutions, ensuring all backend systems genuinely enhance end-user experiences and deliver real value.
- Improve the scalability, reliability, and performance of our third-party data integrations and synchronization pipelines.
- Mentor peers and help shape the long-term technical strategy for the Intelligence product area.
- Has strong backend engineering expertise, ideally in Java (or Kotlin).
- Brings experience building distributed systems, APIs, or large-scale recommendation or personalization services.
- Champions a product mindset within the engineering team, balancing technical excellence with empathy for the user and business context.
- Understands microservice architecture and cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP).
- Makes thoughtful, data-driven decisions and thrives in a fast-moving environment.
- Cares deeply about building intelligent systems that make complex experiences feel simple for customers.
- Experience working with machine learning–powered recommendations or routing engines.
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures or streaming platforms like Kafka or Pub/Sub.
- Background in customer onboarding, personalization, or journey optimization products.
