Role Title: Data & Analytics Contractor
Engagement: Full-time contract
Start: ASAP
End: 28 February 2026
Location: Melbourne (hybrid), requirement for 2 days in office
Reports to: Principal Data and Insights Lead

The Client is delivering reports and a suite of portfolio-level data products. We need a VPS5-level practitioner who can move between SQL/data preparation, dashboarding, and validation/documentation—working pragmatically with analysts to produce reliable, reproducible outputs on time.
Key Outcomes this role would contribute to:
  1. SOPS datasets and assets for Phases 1 & 2 prepared, validated and documented; generation is repeatable via existing code libraries.
  2. Common data view (industry/portfolio and other shared dimensions) delivered to enable like-for-like comparisons across portfolios/industries.
  3. Portfolio Pack refreshes completed to schedule with accurate visuals and commentary inputs.
  4. Ad hoc requests fulfilled with performant SQL and simple, well-designed dashboards where appropriate.
  5. Operational hygiene maintained (tables updated, performance and access issues triaged and resolved, processes documented).
Scope of Work
1) SOPS Work (Phases 1 & 2)
  • Extract, transform and prepare data for charts, tables and commentary.
  • Run and, where safe, parameterise existing programs in our code libraries to generate SOPS outputs.
  • Design and deliver a common view (via SQL or cube-like layer) to compare portfolios/industries and other key dimensions.
  • Generate validation datasets; propose and implement pragmatic validation methodologies (e.g., reconciliation, row-count/uniqueness checks, variance thresholds).
  • Produce clear technical and user documentation.
2) Data Products (Portfolio Packs)
  • Use/edit Power BI dashboards and Excel assets to extract visuals and data for portfolio packs.
  • Perform validation (programmatic + visual) prior to release; log issues and resolutions.
3) Ad Hoc Data Requests
  • Write optimised SQL for defined questions; explain assumptions and caveats.
  • Create/maintain dashboards sourced from database and Qualtrics data.
  • Execute programs from Bitbucket libraries and contribute small improvements (tests, parameters, docs) where appropriate.
4) System Maintenance & Support
  • Update database tables; investigate/resolve performance and access issues (working with platform teams).
  • Monitor scheduled runs; surface risks early and propose mitigations.
Required Skills & Attributes
  • Communication & collaboration: Engages across teams, clarifies requirements, explains trade-offs; summarises issues succinctly.
  • Technical: Advanced SQL, Power BI, Excel; understanding of best coding practice and modular design.
  • Platforms/Tools: SQL Server; familiarity with Microsoft Fabric and Python a plus. Experience with Bitbucket (git) and Jira (work tracking).
  • Systems thinking: Able to troubleshoot program performance and access issues end-to-end.
  • Working style: Proactive, pragmatic, validation-minded; balances speed with quality.
Nice-to-Have
  • Data modelling/cube design for cross-portfolio views.
  • Qualtrics data structures/APIs.
  • Public sector domain experience.
Selection Criteria (explicit)
  1. Demonstrated experience preparing production-grade datasets and dashboards (Power BI/Excel) from SQL sources.
  2. Strong SQL (joins, window functions, CTEs), performance tuning, and data validation techniques.
  3. Experience running and lightly extending existing code bases (Bitbucket/git), with documentation and version control discipline.
  4. Ability to design a reusable “common view” across multiple dimensions.
  5. Clear communication of findings, risks and limitations to non-technical stakeholders.
HOW TO APPLY:
Please submit your resume (in MS Word Format) for consideration via the link below. A cover letter demonstrating your relevant experience may also be reviewed.
