We are looking for a

Director, Software & Automation Product Development

As Director of Software & Automation Product Development, you will lead the execution of software and automation delivery across multiple business lines, ensuring high-quality, safe, and scalable solutions in line with the company’s platform strategy and lifecycle needs. You will oversee cross-functional development teams, drive modern development practices, and ensure tight alignment between platform architecture, product needs, and release readiness. The role is preferably based in Tampere, Finland but other Normet locations can be considered.

Main Responsibilities And Tasks

  • Lead and scale cross-functional software and automation teams responsible for delivering core platform capabilities, control systems, digital services, and fleet management solutions
  • Ensure timely delivery of safety-critical software and embedded automation systems in compliance with internal quality standards and external regulatory requirements
  • Drive the CI/CD infrastructure, DevOps practices, and development toolchain for high-availability and secure software delivery across domains
  • Maintain a strong focus on software quality, security, and performance, embedding secure coding and test automation into delivery workflows
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Validation, Electrification, and Product Management to align software execution with platform architecture and product roadmaps
  • Support and grow technical competence areas (e.g., machine control, UI/UX, connectivity, simulation, cybersecurity) through guild structures and technical leads
  • Manage internal and external software subcontractors, ensuring consistent standards, documentation, and integration processes
  • Champion team culture, agile delivery methods, and continuous improvement across the function

To Shine In This Position, We Hope You Have

  • Strong leadership in software and automation engineering, ideally in safety-critical or industrial domains
  • Familiarity with mobile machinery, robotics, or off-highway systems
  • Knowledge of functional safety standards and cybersecurity is a plus
  • Proven ability to implement and scale modern software practices
  • Competence in managing cross-functional matrix organizations and working with guilds/communities of practice
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English, with ability to explain complex technical topics to non-technical stakeholders
  • Master’s degree (or higher) in Software Engineering, Automation, or a related field
  • Track record of leading teams in safety-critical industries (mobile machinery, automotive, robotics, or similar)
  • Experience in international collaboration (subsidiaries, partners, universities, and suppliers)
