Front Office SWE / Global UI Lead, Investment House, Helsinki [Onsite]
We are working with a data driven investment house in Helsinki. The firm has had sustained success and has committed significant resource to build their acclaimed quant and tech team who support the trading function. This will be their first developer hire into their lean office in the capital and the first frontend-centric developer within the global business. The tech team are involved in a wide number of projects and have built a cutting-edge core trading system. They are working directly with the quant and portfolio management teams to build trading tools and applying machine learning technology and approaches throughout the investment process. This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly successful and very collaborative firm with a progressive and positive working culture that truly values technology as an integral part of their success.
This is a broad front office role consisting of ad hoc and strategic tasks with the wider development team. However, the focus will be on building flexible tools for internal users to analyse market data and support trade ideation. You’ll prototype quickly and then collaborate with the wider engineering team to ensure robustness. In part, due to the nature of the role, the position lends itself to extensive trading UI work. These UI’s will be mainly used for the trading engines, so there will be a big focus on the functionality of these as well as how they look. They are seeking fast UI’s here so a large amount of the work will be making sure these are built correctly and can cope with the workload required from the traders. Therefore, they require an experienced individual who has deep involvement in the development of similar trading analytic UI systems (retail, commercial, internal). This is a role with significant responsibility and wide scope but in simple terms, our client is looking for a 'UI Evangelist' who can take the lead in making their UI best in class. The firm are a C# house with quants favouring Python. However, the client is agnostic on programmatic skills. A strong background in other OOP languages, especially Java or C++ is suitable. You will be central to deciding the best approach to building in this role. Ultimately, you will decide the stack used within the Finnish office.
This fund is a collaborative environment and there will be involvement in several different projects simultaneously. All developers are expected to be involved in discussing and architecting new projects, working on a pipeline of development work, and supporting existing software in production. They are looking for a candidate who can take on immediate significant responsibilities and who can grow further in the role. The aim is for an engineering team to be built out further in Helsinki. Therefore, there may be significant managerial responsibilities going forward. So, experience managing or ability / appetite for such is supportive of any application.
In terms of characteristics the fund hires are high performing self-starters with low ego and the ability to be pragmatic in their approach to work. There is significant exposure to working with a range of stakeholders across the business (working particularly closely with the CTO directly), so strong communication skills are essential. Candidates should have a genuine passion for software development and a general positive attitude.
Requirements:
- Minimum 7+ years’ commercial experience in software development.
- Demonstrable experience working on performative trading centric UI.
- Strong track record of experience with at least one major OOP ecosystem.
- Experience leading or managing teams & an appetite to take on more managerial responsibilities.
- Strong academics in Computer Science / equivalent.
- Experience in the field of systematic would be highly regarded (but not essential).
